Xin Shuang reveals the music of "Long Season": "Looking Back" is not for Wang Xiang but for the audience

From "Hidden Corners" to "The Long Season", in the series directed by Xin Xin, music is never a dispensable embellishment, but an important role to help narrate and shape the characters. "Long Season" Xin Shuang once again joined hands with Ding Ke to create 12 opening songs. At the same time, each episode adopts an impressive ending song, from the beautiful and sad "Blue Moon", to the restless "In Gloom", "Little Star" turned into a "horror nursery rhyme", and "Looking Back" after the dust of the past has settled... Expecting what different soundtracks are used in each episode and speculating about why such soundtracks are used has become a great pleasure for fans to follow the show. A reporter from the Beijing News recently interviewed director Xin Shuang, and then looked back at the behind-the-scenes story of the music of "Long Season".

1、《Blue Moon》(The Molds乐队)

- Ban Yu translates Chinese lyrics

The scene where "Blue Moon" first sounds.

The first time "Blue Moon" sounded was when Wang Yang and Shen Mo met in the first episode. Wang Yang, who failed the college entrance examination, was bored listening to the song in the walkman at the university gate, and a freshman came to ask for directions, he raised his head and saw Shen Mo, and "Blue moon" sounded in his ears, which also became the beginning of the entanglement of the fate of the two. In the subsequent plot, the moon appears in many scenes where the two meet, as if echoing the song of the first meeting. At the end of the first episode, the elderly Wang Xiang finally enters the nightmare of the past against a table of dishes without moving chopsticks. The train roared past the window, and on the wall were black-and-white photographs of his son, and the song sounded again.

In the spicy design, this song actually carries a double expression. Its lyrics are about a lonely person, and when Wang Yang first heard this song in the play, he happened to look up and see Shen Mo, and the audience could see two lonely souls meet. When the song at the end of the first episode sounded again, its meaning had changed, and it became a man waiting for his beloved under the moon, that is, Wang Xiang waiting for his lost son.

Xin Shuang suggests that you can go and take a look at the Chinese lyrics of the ending song "Blue Moon" of the first episode, which was translated by Ban Yu, the literary planner of the show, and the translation is particularly beautiful - blue moon, you see me standing alone, there is no dream to look forward to, no love to rely on. Blue moon, you know why I am here, you have heard my prayers, please give my beloved. "I thought it should have a beautiful translation, so I went to the class teacher and asked if he could help flip it. It was given to him at noon, and the class teacher turned it over in the evening, apt and perfect! ”

2、《月光(Suite Bergamasque L.75: III. Moonlight) 》(Achille-Claude Debussy)

——Wang Yang has "Moonlight" in his headphones

When Shen Mo was working part-time to play the piano, he encountered vexatious guests.

In the third episode, Shen Mo worked part-time at Victoria International Entertainment Plaza to play the piano, and the song he played was Debussy's "Moonlight". The guest was not satisfied and asked to change to "The Love of the Slimman", Shen Mo could not play, provoked the guests, and finally Mr. Ge of the entertainment square came out to play the round. The song also appears in the transition at the end of the third episode, where Wang Yang, who is bathing, changes from a bright smile to a shrunken fear.

Wang Yang changed from a bright smile to a shrunken fear.

Shen Mo played the scene of "Moonlight", and there was a small terrier in the original script. Lao Ge came over and said to Shen Mo: "Debiao can play it, but "The Love of the Slimman" can't play it?" "Because the composer is called Debussy. But when editing, I felt that this story was not suitable for the expression of jokes, and removed this meme.

But in the fifth episode, Wang Xiang taught Wang Yang to write poems to rhyme, "snap your fingers, the back should be blowing a small trumpet, ticking and ticking" in the scene, the director quietly hid "Moonlight" again. When Wang Xiang entered the house, Wang Yang was wearing headphones, and at that moment the earphones were playing "Moonlight". But viewers need to turn up the volume of the video loud to hear it. "Moonlight" is actually a spiritual communication between Wang Yang and Shen Mo. Why Shen Mo can let go of his guards in the face of Wang Yang is traceable, because they have communication and resonance on the spiritual level. ”

3, "Little Star"

- Full of hate, control and maternal love

"Little Star" first appeared in "The Long Season", it was Shen Mo's uncle Shen Dongliang who hummed when he cut her nails, which made people think of what a terrible past this girl had experienced. At the end of the third episode, Shen Mo came out after watching the movie and was covered by Shen Dongliang's shadow, and the ending song "Little Star Variations" sounded. After the broadcast of "Hidden Corner", netizens said that "Little White Boat" could not be listened to from now on, "The Long Season" was broadcast, and "Little Star" also joined the ranks of "horror nursery rhymes". The audience ridiculed Xin Shuang as the "destroyer of AKA nursery rhymes", and he smiled and gladly accepted.

Shen Dongliang hummed "Little Star" while cutting Shen Mo's nails.

In fact, there is also a small story behind the soundtrack of "Little Star". In the scene of cutting nails, Shen Dongliang's lines in the script are to recall Shen Mo buying her a piano when she was a child, but teacher Hou Yansong (as Shen Dongliang) hummed the tune of "Little Star" during the live performance, which gave Xin Shuang inspiration. "I'm probably sensitive to that, and when he hums the melody of Little Star, I feel as if it can be a symbol."

In the process of filming and editing, it happened that the last scene of that episode was the moment when Shen Dongliang's huge shadow covered Shen Mo, and Xin Shuang was thinking about what kind of ending should be given to the audience, and he remembered "Little Star" sung by Shen Dongliang. "What will Shen Mo experience in that music, and what kind of shadows will be formed? So I ended with Little Star. I think this is particularly interesting, it can prove that the creation itself is a living thing, not fixed and fixed at a certain moment. ”

Shen Dongliang's huge shadow covered Shen Mo.

Later, when Li Qiaoyun called home to comfort the sick child, there was no scene of her singing in the script, and Xin Shuang thought of "Little Star" at that time, and he felt that it could be a comparison. "How does this music feel when there is love, and how does it feel when it is full of hatred and control? There is a contrasting meaning in. ”

4、《In Gloom》(Life Awaits乐队)

- The music at this time should be grumpy "nuclear"

At the end of "Episode 9", Shen Mo, Fu Weijun, and Wang Yang, three young "unlucky eggs", lick their wounds in the video hall that was beaten into a mess. Wang Yang said: "We should be the unlucky people in the world." Shen Mo raised his head from the dark red light: "It's them who are unlucky." At this point, Life Awaits' roaring and exploding "In Gloom" sounded, like complex emotions surging within the characters.

"In Gloom" sounded when the three young people had complicated hearts.

For how to choose the right ending song, Xin Shuang has his own set of methods. This "Long Season" post-editing lasted seven or eight months. In the past seven or eight months, he worked with the editing director in the computer room every day, and his feelings about the film were very real and specific. On the way home from the computer room, he would concentrate on listening to new music that he had not heard. "I want to present something new to the audience. During that time, I listened to a lot, and once I heard a song 'snap' with my feelings in the computer room, I would collect it and put it on the next day to try it out in the computer room to see if it was right. ”

In the ninth episode, before he chose a suitable ending song, he already had a preliminary setting - the music style should be very violent "core" feeling, and at that moment all the stories were going to be restless. During that time, he listened to the latest music about "nuclear", and just found that "In Gloom" felt right, read the lyrics, and matched the story, so he chose this one.

5, "Blue Danube" (Johann Strauss Jr.)

——Inspiration from Kubrick's picture

In the tenth episode, Shen Mo cut off his fingers, and the music of "Blue Danube" sounded. The vista of the birch forest, the whole picture of the factory, Wang Xiang coming down from the locomotive, the old lady opened the garbage bin, and the bag containing the corpse was thrown into the river... The past pictures are strung together frame by frame, and the suspenseful puzzles are solved little by little, and the melody of the waltz is perfectly coordinated, as if countless trickles converge into a large river, silent and unstoppable.

"Blue Danube" sounded after this scene.

The ending song of this episode was stuck for a long time, and he knew in his heart that the timeline of 1997 and 1998 was going to be buttoned up at this moment, but he never thought about what kind of music to use. "The most elaborate version of the cut usually waits for me to settle the music and then determine the style of the edit as the music feels." Until one day, he called his son's little genius watch, and the color bell of the watch happened to be "Blue Danube", and at that moment, the picture of Kubrick's "2001 Space Odyssey" jumped out of his mind (Note: "Blue Danube" is also the soundtrack of "2001: A Space Odyssey").

"The feeling of that music is that it is not rendering any emotions, it flows very quietly, especially like fate is happening naturally, and no one can reverse it. I think that's how it feels at the end of episode 10. "The next day he went to the machine room and put the music of "Blue Danube" on it, verified his feelings, and then readjusted the editing to the rhythm of the music." Now you see the clip, all the characters and things seem to be dancing. It is a very objective perspective, heaven and earth, not happy or sad. ”

6, "Looking Back" (Jiang Yuheng)

- The last song to the audience

At the end of "The Long Season", the elderly Wang Xiang wears a new red sweater given by his son Wang Bei, runs in the cornfield run by the wheels of the times, chasing himself who drove the train twenty years ago and shouting: "Look ahead, don't look back!" The familiar Jiang Yuheng's singing voice sounded, leaving the audience with the space and aftertaste to "look back" at the entire story.

End of "The Long Season".

Of all the ending songs of "The Long Season", "Looking Back" is one of the two songs most familiar to the audience (the other is "Little Star"), and it is also the earliest music that Xin Shuang has settled. "Most of the ending songs were not finalized during the script writing stage, except for this one. After the last scene was written, it was this song "Looking Back" that sounded in my ears. I decided at that time that it had to end with "Looking Back." ”

Xin Shuang said that the ending song of "Looking Back" was not for Wang Xiang, because Wang Xiang had already come out at that moment. "Looking Back" is for all the main creators and for the audience. "This song is more for the audience." There will be no more old dreams tonight', and the story ends, suddenly like a dream, my heart is still there. ”
