Discover the secrets of the discolored lizard under ultraviolet light

According to foreign media reports, scientists have found that some color-changing lizards may be able to adapt to the glowing world of "Avatar". Lizards may be known for changing color, but they also hide a different kind of surprise: the ability to shine under ultraviolet light, and the results are visually stunning.

Dr David Pr?tzel of the Bavarian Institute for the Collection of Herbarium animals said in a statement: "When we illuminated our collection of discolored lizards with ultraviolet lamps, we could hardly believe our eyes, and almost all species showed blue, patterns that were previously invisible on the head, some even on the whole body. ”

His team found that the blue pattern matched the shape of the bone protrusions under the skin of the chameleon lizard. A closer look reveals that some parts of the lizard's skin are very thin and transparent. An article published by the University of Munich describes these parts as "allowing ultraviolet light to reach the window of the bone, where it is absorbed, and then emitted again as blue fluorescence." ”

Frank Glaw, a zoologist at the Bavarian Institute for the Collection of Herbarium, said: "It has long been known that bones fluoresce under ultraviolet light, but the fluorescence emitted by animals using this phenomenon is surprising to us and was previously unknown. ”
