Chapter Three: Mountains and Gorges—Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano located in the northeast of Tanzania, near the Kenyan border on the East African plateau, and its main peak, Kibo Peak, is 5892 meters above sea level, which is the highest mountain in Africa, known as the "Roof of Africa". The main body of the mountain extends nearly 80 kilometers in an east-west direction, mainly composed of three extinct volcanoes, Kibo, Mavinci and Hira, covering an area of 756 square kilometers.
Kilimanjaro has two main peaks, connected by a 10 km long saddle-shaped ridge between its Kibo and Mavenzi main peaks. Although Mount Kilimanjaro is located at the equator, the summit is a world of crystal ice and snow, while the vast land at the foot of the mountain is a savannah scene.
There are many legends about the formation of the snowy peaks of Kilimanjaro. One of the legends is that there was a fierce battle between the gods and demons, who lit a fire from the mountain, and the smoke rose to the sky, and the gods fought each other and extinguished the fire with heavy rain to defeat the demons. Since then, Mount Kilimanjaro has been crowned with brilliant snow. In fact, the permanent glacier at the top of Kilimanjaro is related to its altitude, although Kilimanjaro is near the equator, there is still a vertical climate zone, the glacier and snow at the top of the mountain are intertwined with the forest and grassland below the mountain, and the rare ice and snow at the equator bring a touch of coolness to the hot environment.
In 1968, Kilimanjaro National Park was established in the mountains from the summit of Kilimanjaro to an altitude of 1,800 meters. The park is rich in color, the landscape is pleasant, and there are many rare animals. It was inscribed on the World List of Cultural and Natural Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1981.
