At the age of 12, Hughes began playing basketball and soon became a star player at Christian Brothers Academy in St. Louis and led CBC High School to a state championship in '96.
At the age of 17, the Universities of Kansas, Syracuse and Michigan were only willing to offer him a fraction of the scholarships. When it was Hughes' turn, he decided to stay home and play for St. Louis University. This was mainly due to his fears of leaving his mother and brother. After a year at St. Louis University, he joined the NBA
