Yesterday, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTA), known as the "British Oscars", announced the nominations, and no people of color were nominated for the performance awards, which were controversial and boycotted.
The same thing happened in 2015, when no people of color were shortlisted for the British Academy Awards in the acting category, sparking the #OscarsSoWhite boycott.
In 2017, no people of color were nominated for the British Academy Awards for Best Actor/Actress, which once again caused a small controversy.
In 2018, a report showed that 94% of all nominees in the history of the British Academy Awards were white. An analysis by business psychology firm Pearn Kandola also showed that 92 percent of those nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were white.
After the nomination was announced yesterday, it was inevitable that the controversy would re-emerge. All of the actor-in-class awards — including Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor — were all white among the 20 nominees. In contrast, the Golden Globe Awards, Cynthia Erivo ("Harriet"), Jennifer Lopez ("The Dancing Thief"), Okafina ("Don't Tell Her"),and so on can be nominated.
In addition, Margot Robbie was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for two works" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", and Scarlett Johansson was nominated for Best Actress and Supporting Actress with "Marriage Story" and "The Whimsical World of Young Jojo", respectively, which also triggered the question of the British Academy Awards' excessive preference for white people.
Currently, #OscarsSoWhite (the Academy Awards are too white) has become a hot hashtag on Twitter.
The British Academy Awards itself admits the result is "frustrating". BAFTA director Emma Bell told Foreign Media: "We would have liked to see nominations more diverse, which is still an industry-wide issue. ”
