Bret Robbins, who served as creative director of Sledgehammer at Hammer Factory, cleared up some of the rumors surrounding Advanced Warfare 2 in a recent interview. He said a sequel to Advanced Warfare was in production at one point and even had an early prototype, but the project was canceled when Sledgehammer got the chance to work on Call of Duty 14: WWII, which Robbins thought was "a better opportunity." ”

Another unreleased project for Sledgehammer is a third-person action game, which Robbins describes as "Uncharted meets Call of Duty." When Sledgehammer partnered with Infinity Ward to develop Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the project was abandoned.

When asked if he would like to reboot the project or make a sequel to Advanced Wars, Robbins chose the latter. He cites the fact that, unlike Modern Warfare 3, which was interrupted by Infinity Ward, Advanced Warfare is their own original project, and confirms that "everything about it is Sledgehammer's."

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg has previously said that Sledgehammer Games wanted to develop Advanced Warfare 2, but eventually moved on to other projects.
