There are two "Liu Chun" in the three kingdoms, one is the son of Liu Biao and the other is the son of Liu Chan

author:History and the hearts of people

During the Three Kingdoms period at the end of the Han Dynasty, most people's names were single characters, such as Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Ma Chao, Huang Zhong, and so on. On this basis, the case of duplicate names, that is, the same name and surname, is naturally difficult to avoid. For example, at that time, Eastern Wu and Shu Han each had a military general named Ma Zhong. For Ma Zhong of Eastern Wu, everyone is familiar with it, because whether in the main history or in the interpretation, it was he who captured Guan Yu's father and son.

As far as Ma Zhong of the Shu Han Dynasty was concerned, he was once called a sage by Liu Bei. Zhuge Liang, the chancellor, opened the government to govern affairs, and appointed Ma Zhong as the governor of the gate. In the third year of Jianxing (225), Ma Zhong served as the Taishou of Mu Mu Commandery (牂牁郡) to quell the Mu Mu rebellion. Later, he served as the governor of The Prefecture and suppressed the rebellion of the powerful marshal Liu Xuan. And as far as the author wants to talk about Liu Chun today, there is also a case of duplicate names.

I. Liu Chun (son of Liu Biao)

Liu Qi was the second son of Liu Biao, the mu of Jingzhou, and at the beginning, Liu Biao was more fond of his eldest son Liu Qi, that is, he was ready to let Liu Qi take charge of Jingzhou. However, Liu Biao's second son, Liu Chun, married Lady Cai's niece. For lady Cai's Cai clan, which is a local family clan in Jingzhou, Liu Biao was able to take charge of Jingzhou when he was first able to do so, and it was inseparable from the help of Cai Mao and others. Therefore, after getting Lady Cai's liking, Liu Chun's weight in Liu Biao's mind gradually increased.

More crucially, Lady Cai often praised Liu Qi in front of Liu Qi and denigrated Liu Qi. As a result, Liu Biao and Lady Cai planned to make Liu Chun the heirs, while Cai Mao and Zhang Yun were his henchmen. For Liu Qi, because of the frame-up of Lady Cai and others, he not only lost Liu Biao's favor, but was also forced to leave Xiangyang and go to Jiangxia County. At the same time, after Liu Bei came to Jingzhou, Liu Qi befriended Liu Bei to fight against Liu Qi and others. In other words, although Liu Chun and Liu Qi are brothers, their relationship is relatively tense.

In the thirteenth year of Jian'an (208), Liu Biao became seriously ill, and Liu Qi returned from Jiangxia to visit his father. Lady Cai's younger brother Cai Mao and Cai Mao's nephew Zhang Yun were afraid that their father and son would touch Liu Biao when they met, and even affect Liu Mao's status. Therefore, they turned Liu Qi away and did not allow him to see Liu Biao. Soon after, Liu Biao died of illness, and Liu Chun took over as Jingzhou Mu with the support of Cai Mao and others. At the same time, after pacifying the Central Plains, Cao Cao sent a large army to conquer Jingzhou.

In the face of Cao Cao's army, Ku Yue, Han Song, and Eastern Cao Xun persuaded Liu Chun to surrender to Cao Cao. Liu Chun still wanted to resist and said, "Isn't it okay to guard Jingzhou with all of you today, guard your father's inheritance, and watch the world change?" But Fu Xun said: "There is a general body of reverse obedience, and there is a definite trend of strength and weakness." It is the way of rebellion for us to resist the imperial court with our subordinates; it is certainly a dangerous thing to use Jingzhou to oppose the Central Plains; it is inappropriate to resist Cao Cao with Liu Bei. All three are insufficient, and trying to resist the army of the imperial court is the way to perish. How does the general feel about himself compared to Liu Bei? Liu Chun replied, "Not as well." Fu Xun therefore said, "If Liu Bei cannot resist Cao Cao, then Jingzhou cannot survive on its own." If Liu Bei could resist Cao Cao, then Liu Bei would no longer be a subordinate of the general. Hopefully, the general will not be more confused. ”

Liu Chun therefore decided to surrender, and when Cao Cao led his army to Xiangyang, Liu Chun opened the city gates. In this regard, Liu Bei went out of The XiaKou to join Liu Qi. Cao Cao made Liu Chun the Assassin of Qingzhou and made him a Marquis of Lilie. According to Pei Songzhi's annotations to the "Tales of Wei Wu", Cao Cao later went to the imperial court and appointed Liu Chun as a counselor, that is, this was obviously a false position. Of course, for Cao Cao, there was no need to get rid of Liu Chun, who had no real power, that is, Liu Chun should have a good ending.

2. Liu Chun (son of Liu Chan)

Liu Chun was Liu Chan's third son, but due to the lack of historical records, there is no clear statement about the time of Liu Chun's birth. In the fifteenth year of Yanxi (252), Liu Chun was crowned king of Xihe by Liu Chan. As a prince, it is undoubtedly relatively normal to receive the treatment of being crowned king. Of course, for the Shu Han Dynasty, because there was only the land of Yizhou, the king of the domain that Liu Chan had sealed should not have an actual fief.

In the spring of the fifth year of Jing Yao (262), Liu Chun died. A year later, the Battle of Wei and Shu officially broke out, and in the face of the Cao Wei army led by Deng Ai, Liu Chan gave up resistance, which prompted shu Han to perish in 263 AD. Thus, for Liu Chun, he did not witness the demise of the Shu Han. Of course, this may have avoided the scourge of killing, such as Liu Chan's eldest son Liu Xuan, who was killed by the rebels in the Zhonghui Rebellion.
