To escape poverty, illegal immigrants continue to pour into Italy, multiple ships sink, dozens of deaths and disappearances!

On March 26, the Tunisian coast guard said at least 29 migrants trying to travel from Tunisia to Italy drowned in the Mediterranean.

Tunisia has replaced Libya as the main departure point for migrants fleeing poverty and conflict in Africa to live a better life in Europe.

This is the latest death involving migrants, and Tunisian authorities have cracked down on undocumented migrants from sub-Saharan Africa.

National Guard spokesman Hosammeddin Jabali said Tunisian fishermen found 19 bodies.

On the night of Saturday, March 25, the Coast Guard also found eight bodies and rescued 11 survivors from a sunken vessel, he said.

Two other bodies were found in the waters near the Tunisian port of Sfax.

The coast guard said it intercepted about 80 boats bound for Italy and detained more than 3,000 migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan African countries, the coast guard said.

It is not clear how many people were on board the sunken ship.

A Tunisian NGO that tracks migrants said five boats were believed to have sunk near the Tunisian port of Sfax in the past two days and that 67 people were unaccounted for.

At least 12,000 migrants arrived in Italy from Tunisia this year, compared to just 1,300 in the same period of 2022, according to the United Nations.
