Yan Shunkai was born in Shanghai in 1937 and was admitted to the Central Academy of Drama in 1959. But because he was not handsome enough, he could only play some witty small roles during his school years. Perhaps he could not get rid of the fate of playing small roles in his life, so he simply went to the Shanghai Burlesque Troupe after graduation to become an actor and started a comedy acting career.
One of his most successful roles was in the 1980 film adaptation of Mr. Lu Xun's famous work "A Q Zheng biography", in which he played the role of the funny, humorous and self-deceptive Ah Q. This role also allowed Mr. Yan Lao to win the Popular Film Hundred Flowers Award, and since then Yan Shunkai has had the nickname of "A Q". Therefore, there are such untrue words as "Yan Shunkai is hospitalized and no one visits, and the evening scene is desolate.".
