This article introduces 10 ways to clean up disk space, and you will know how to do it the next time you encounter C drive red. If you like it, please like it and collect it~
Clean up the Windows.old directory
This directory is a folder that backs up important files on the old system during the process of reinstalling the Windows system.
Windows.old is generally located in the root directory of the C drive, if you are sure that the original old system does not have data that needs to be copied, then be bold to delete this directory.
If the system is newly installed, it has not been reinstalled. Then there is no such file under C drive.
Clean up the third-party app cache
The main applications are: WeChat, QQ, DingTalk, etc., depending on the frequently used software.
How to find the cache directory of these applications? Here is an example with WeChat, other applications cache directory can not find the comment area message.
WeChat: Right-click the WeChat icon and click Set to select. Then as shown below.
Because WeChat will cache the sent video pictures at work, it can save a lot of space after cleaning up when ensuring that the data is useless.
App migration
Sometimes, we install applications to C drive, but the data of these applications cannot be deleted, and we can use tools to migrate applications.
Here, it is recommended to use the Application Migration function in Aomei Partition Assistant, as shown in the following figure.
Disk Cleanup
- Search for the Disk Cleanup tool
- The pop-up window selects the drive letter to clean
- Select the file types you want to clean in the pop-up cleanup dialog box and click OK.
Clean up temporary files
- Open the Settings image to open the settings dialog
- Select System
- Select Storage on the left, and then select Temporary Files on the right to open the dialog box
- After checking the items to be deleted, click the Delete Files button.
Clean up the system log
System logs mainly record information about software and hardware and system problems in the system. For the average user, system logs are of little use. Deleting system logs also does not affect any use of the system.
Deletion method:
- Search for [Event Viewer], double-click to open it, expand [Windows Logs], select the corresponding category, and right-click [Clear Log].
Empty the Recycle Bin
Sometimes, we delete files and find that the footprint does not become smaller. This is because the files that we delete go to the Recycle Bin. The Recycle Bin still takes up disk space on the system. So at this time, it is necessary to empty the recycle bin to really make space.
But before emptying, make sure that the files in the Recycle Bin are no longer in use.
The above 7 cleaning methods will not have any impact on the operation of the system. But the next 3 methods, if not the disk really can't clear up space, it is not recommended. Because all three methods have their side effects, improper operation may affect the functionality and stability of the system.
Turn off Windows hibernation
The computer creates a hiberfil .sys hiberfil file for hibernation, which is about 4G in size; its function is that when the hibernate wakes, the desktop can return to the state before hibernation.
When there is not enough disk space, you can turn off the Windows hibernation function, which can free up 4G space.
Closing steps:
- Open a command window
- Enter powercfg. exe -h off, carriage return execution
Turn off Windows Reserved Storage
- As in the above method, first enter the storage interface
- Click Show more types
- Click the System & Retention option
- As you can see from the figure below, the reserved storage is 7.52G
This is not recommended to be turned off, as this reserved storage is used to prevent the system from suddenly running out of storage space in case of contingencies. If this feature is turned off, system stability may be affected.
Of course, if there is really no disk space that can be saved, then turn off the reserved space step:
Open the CMD window and follow the method above. Enter the command:
DISM.exe /Online /Set-ReservedStorageState /State:Disabled
If you want to turn on reserved space:
DISM.exe /Online /Set-ReservedStorageState /State:Enabled
Turn off virtual memory
If the system is configured with memory RAM above 8G. Turning off virtual memory does not affect the system much. If it is less than 8G, or even less than 4G, it is recommended not to turn off the virtual memory. You can configure the directory of virtual memory to a different drive letter.
Close method:
- Right-click This Computer and select Properties
- On the right side of the About screen, select Advanced System Settings
- In the System Properties dialog box, select Advanced - Performance - Settings
- In the Performance Options dialog box, select Advanced - Virtual Memory - Change
- In the Virtual Memory dialog box, you can select the directory, size, whether to page, and so on.
