How did the image of Jiangnan "small bridge flowing water" come into being

Time:

Saturday, February 25, 13:00

Place:

Sina Weibo @ Wu Culture Museum, Bilibili Wuzhong Museum

Speaker:

Zhao Shiyu (Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts, Department of History, Peking University)

Most people think that "small bridge flowing water" is a typical image of Jiangnan water town, but during the Tang and Song dynasties, it often appeared, even first, in poetic works depicting scenery in other regions, and it was only from the Southern Song Dynasty that it began to be used more and more to depict Jiangnan. It was also from the Southern Song Dynasty that "small bridges and flowing water" began to appear in landscape paintings depicting the scenery of the south of the Jiangsu, but it hardly became the subject of the paintings, and began to change by the middle of the Ming Dynasty. At the same time, Jiangnan's garden landscaping and garden painting, which are the creation of the ideal feelings of the literati, are also used as a design element. With the rise and development of Jiangnan towns in the Ming and Qing dynasties, small bridges and flowing water gradually became the exclusive image of Jiangnan water towns, behind this process is the reduction of the national water area due to agricultural development and other reasons, the wide water surface becomes a narrow waterway, and due to the density of settlements and lanes, thus forming the conditions for small bridges and flowing water. This condition appeared and disappeared earlier in many places, and Jiangnan happened to have it in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and was given a local cultural representation by the dominant Jiangnan poetry, painting, and garden works.

Focusing on a series of literary activities and works produced during the Kangxi Southern Tour, this lecture explores how these court literatures created outside the Forbidden City constitute a special cultural landscape in the history of Chinese literature between imperial politics and folk customs, and beyond history and imagination.

The practice of border politics and the cognition of frontier studies by Qin and Han historians

Time:

March 1 (Wed) 19:00

Place:

Tencent Meeting (ID:476283271)

Speaker:

Wang Zijin (Professor, School of History and Culture, Minzu University of China)

Historiography is closely related to frontier studies. Frontier affairs were a major theme in state politics during the Qin and Han dynasties. Most of the influential historians of the Qin and Han dynasties contributed to the construction of frontier studies, and their ideas of frontier studies were often related to their border political practices. Lu Jia and Jia Yi were the first political commentators and historians to summarize the history of Qin. Lu Jia envoyed South Vietnam, and Jia Yi served as the king of Changsha. All of them had participated in the handling of political affairs in the direction of the "Southern Domain" and "Southern Domain". The young Sima Qian, as a "Langzhong", once "served as an envoy to the west to conquer Ba and the south of Shu, and to the south of Liaoqiong, Qiao, and Kunming, and also reported his orders." Ban Gu expressed mature opinions on the Xiongnu policy. And Dou Xian "went out to fight the Xiongnu, with Gu as the central protector, and the councilor." The accounts and analyses of frontiers and ethnic issues in the Shiji and Hanshu have the background of the cultural cognition formed by Maban based on the practice of handling border politics.
