Editor's note: In 1958, the Baur Taulgai (abbreviated as Baurgei) farm was first built, and three in and three out of Ulan Bu and the Great Desert failed to gain a foothold. In 1962, the Pakistan League Administration (now Bayannur City) dispatched a group of young cadres and professional and technical personnel to advance into the desert hinterland under the leadership of Comrade Yuan Chengzhong of the old Red Army to develop and build in the desert hinterland. In 1963, hundreds of young workers from various enterprises and undertakings in the autonomous region and urban knowledgeable young people were accepted to enrich the farm, creating a human feat of painstakingly transforming Ulan Bu and the Great Desert. In 1969, the Mongolian Production and Construction Corps of the Beijing Military Region was established, and Baurgai Farm was reorganized into the 5th Regiment of the Inner Mongolia Production and Construction Corps. In 1975, after the Corps was abolished, it was restored to the original name of Baurgei Farm. The Baurtaul Legimon language means "barren land" and the local vernabe word is "gray sand egg".
The author is a Hohhot intellectual youth who came to the farm to support the construction of northern Xinjiang in 1963, and as an older generation of builders, he experienced the difficult years of the founding period.
Adhere to the grassroots to deliver medicine to the masses
After coming to Baurgai Farm for a few years, I feel that there are really many talents here for hidden dragons and crouching tigers. Farm cadres, workers, and family members come from all over the world, including veterans of the Old Red Army, the Old Eighth Road, the War of Liberation, and the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, as well as experienced peasants and highly skilled workers.
Here I want to talk about Dr. Liu Zhicheng and Liu Dacheng of the farm clinic. He was a volunteer hygienist who returned from the battlefield to resist US aggression and aid Korea, once risked his life to rescue the wounded and sick under artillery fire, returned to China and went to a college for further study, and became an internal medicine doctor after graduation, he accumulated rich experience in practice, especially the noble medical ethics and excellent medical skills shown by Baurgei Farm were very trusted by farm workers and surrounding villagers.
Baurgei Farm was expanded in 1962, and a health center was set up in the field department, equipped with several doctors and nurses, who were still competent for treating common diseases among the workers, but in case of major diseases or serious work-related injuries, they still had to send a car to the League Hospital a hundred miles away for treatment. However, when encountering pregnant women giving birth to babies urgently, the health center is really a little difficult:
First, it is technically difficult. Pregnant women generally go to the city hospital early to wait for delivery, and if a difficult labor occurs, the clinic does not have a gynecologist and the equipment is insufficient.
Second, there are ideological obstacles. The remaining feudal consciousness among the masses and the lack of scientific and medical knowledge were generally unacceptable to male doctors.

In the Spring Festival of 1964, the farmer family was busy reuniting to drink wine and eat dumplings, and Liu Zhicheng's family was the same. Suddenly breaking into a young junior who was anxious to speak and change his tone, he shouted continuously:
"Dr. Liu, Dr. Liu, my wife is not right now, like a difficult birth, you hurry up and take a look!"
Hearing the urgent help, Dr. Liu comforted him, put down his dishes and chopsticks, kicked his shoes on the ground, rushed to the infirmary, took the necessary equipment and medicines, and rushed to the pregnant woman's home.
Looking at the distant figure, Dr. Liu's daughter-in-law was unhappy, "This day is rushing!" It is not easy to eat and stop dumplings on the first day of the new year. ”
The unhappiness still came from her unhappiness that her husband went to deliver a young daughter-in-law. Although family members also know that doctors do not know gender in front of patients, it is their sacred duty to save lives. But it was still not happy for his turn to happen here.
Dr. Liu's family is not happy, in fact, pregnant women are not happy to have a male doctor deliver their birth, how embarrassing is this? But the farm is such a condition, people's lives are at stake, you have to do it, and you have to do it if you don't do it.
When Dr. Liu arrived, the mother was already exhausted, and her face was haggard and looked very painful. Dr. Liu hurriedly disinfected for examination, and soon diagnosed uterine atony and delayed labor. He comforted the woman and helped her build her confidence and gave her a midwifery shot. At the same time, he instructed her to actively cooperate and guide her to hold her breath and exert herself sometimes, and sometimes to relax and rest. After a series of intense treatments, the mother finally gave birth safely. Then Dr. Liu cut off the umbilical cord for the baby, squeezed out the secretions in the baby's mouth and nose with gauze, wiped it clean, and patted his feet to make him cry and breathe. Only after hearing the baby's first cry on earth did he breathe a sigh of relief and wipe the beads of sweat on his forehead.
The pregnant woman's husband saw that the mother and son were safe and grateful, holding Dr. Liu's hands, not knowing what to say.
Dr. Liu waved his hand and said, "Nothing, nothing, it's better for children and adults to be safe and sound!" ”
After explaining the precautions for the recovery of mother and son, he left in a sound of thanks.
When I returned home, I saw that none of the cooked dumplings had moved, and my daughter-in-law was still sitting on the kang head sulking.
Seeing the snub of his own family during the New Year's Festival, Dr. Liu didn't say anything, quickly opened the stove and hot dumplings, and handed chopsticks to his daughter-in-law in a bowl. That's how slowly he said:
"That's the condition on our farm. The incident is urgent, and I am a doctor who can't see death without saving it! On the first day of the new year, everyone has a big fat boy, what a celebration and accumulation of virtues? ”
After some enlightenment in love, the daughter-in-law finally broke into a smile. The family gathered around to eat fragrant New Year dumplings, and laughter filled this happy family again.
