Universal 1440 Entertainment recently announced that "Mulan" actor Yuan Wenzhong will direct the sequel to the 2013 fantasy action film "47 Ronin" starring Keanu Reeves, and now the writers for this sequel have also been raised.

According to Deadline, former WWE wrestler and now New York Times best-selling author AJ Mendez and Lucifer actress Amy Garcia have signed up to co-write the script for the sequel.

AJ Mendes and Amy Garcia recently founded Scrappy Heart Productions and are adapting AJ's memoir, Crazy Is My Superpower. The two also borrowed from the Netflix series "Beauty Wrestling League" to co-create IDW's Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World. AJ also co-authored a Wonder Woman comic, Wonder Woman Black & Gold, which will be released in June this year.

In a statement, Garcia promised that the untitled sequel to 47 Ronin would be "a diverse, inclusive action film" with "strong female protagonists" and, combined with director Yuan Wenzhong's vision, blending genre styles such as kung fu, horror, cyberpunk and action.

The first Ronin 47 film, roughly based on the famous Zhongchenzang incident, tells the story of Keanu Reeves leading a group of samurai to avenge their disgraced late lord.

The fact that Ronin 47 had a sequel was somewhat surprising, as Ronin 47 failed miserably at the box office that year — $151 million worldwide, with an estimated budget of $175 million to $225 million.
