Roaring engines, flying dust, riding the speed of dust, glorious trophies... Recently, at the "2021 Society of Automotive Engineers of China Baja Competition", two Baha'i racing teams of Wuhan University of Technology won the first prize in the country. During the year's preparation time, they are both the designers and builders of the cars and the drivers. From drawings to racing cars to the flying track, more than 60 students of the team have jointly realized a wonderful flying life, and in the process of car construction and driving, they have improved their professional knowledge level and teamwork ability.

The team won the award

Homemade parts are hand-installed for racing

"This is the first draft of our design, this is a revised draft, these are all revised design drafts..." Wang Aoqi, the captain of the school's fuel Baja racing team, showed the car design drawings to the Jimu News reporter. According to him, the college student teams participating in this event need to design and manufacture a single-seat, mid-engine small off-road vehicle in accordance with the rules of the event and the racing car manufacturing standards, using the same type of engine provided by Bailitong within the specified time.

Fuel Baja Racing Team design drawings

Aiming for this goal, the team began designing the car last October. After each version of the design drawings was revised, the electrical group, power transmission group, suspension group and steering group focused on the content exchange and exploration responsible for and continuously improved. They also used computer simulations, and finally the fuel Baja team decided to design a small four-wheel drive single-seater with a wheelbase of 1320 mm and a wheelbase of 1430 mm.

Once the design artwork is determined, the first challenge that comes head-on is racing production. "In addition to the engine and shock absorbers, almost all the other parts of our car are designed by the team themselves and made by themselves." Wang Aoqi introduced. To make the frame, the team purchased a large number of steel pipes and then processed the steel pipes into elbows. After the elbows are made, they cut, sand and weld them according to the drawings. "For more than 10 days, we've been working on frames, and when we're not in class, we're often in the studio all day until late at night." Wang Bin, the leader of the frame team of the team, introduced.

The studio's CNC lathes and wire-cut machines are also often busy, with students working on lathes for parts such as welding sleeves and lifting lugs. Steering wheel, swing arm, front column, dashboard, etc. Students group homemade parts.

Teams assemble racing cars

After the group production is completed, the team begins to "puzzle" and assemble the various parts. Finally, in June of this year, the team successfully completed the assembly of the car. "This racing car is a testimony to the growth and harvest of the students, they make their own parts, assemble themselves, very good." The team's head coach, Teacher Tian Zhewen of the School of Automobile Of Wuhan University of Technology, praised it.

Live in the farmhouse and take the car to practice

After the car is assembled, the car is not fast, it is not safe, and these require the team to carry out a lot of experiments. Since July this year, the fuel Baja team and the electric car Baja team have taken the car to do experimental tests on various roads in Wuhan to test the reliability, power and fuel economy of the car.

In the middle of summer in Wuhan, the scorching sun, they often run in the outdoor sports car for a day, and the car is running people also "running". Team members accompany the car at all times, observing its performance and condition, and basic disassembly tools and parts such as wrenches are placed next to the venue for maintenance and overhaul of the car at any time.

On July 20, they took both the fuel Baha and the electric Baha to Yezhi Lake in Wuhan for 15 days of experimental testing. Students drew runways around deep pits and large rocks, and in the training, large puddles, large stones, dirt slopes, mounds and other complex terrain emerged in an endless stream.

Team field training

During a training session in August, the team was in the sports car when they heard a strange noise in the vehicle's four-wheel drive system. They hurried to stop and check and found that a pair of bevel gears in the reducer were damaged. They immediately disassembled the reducer and brought it back to school for parts replacement. There were also unexpected problems such as suspension fracture during the training, and after the suspension broke, they quickly analyzed the cause and optimized the material. After repeated experiments, the team learned more about the performance of the car and laid the foundation for the later stages of the race.

Since the training area is located in the suburbs and the nearby infrastructure is not perfect, the students live in shifts in a nearby farmhouse and keep vigil at night. During the 15-day training, the students were tanned, "We were tanned for a lap, and the riders often practiced soreness, but everyone was insisting on doing this thing well." Electric Baja Team Captain Deng Shiping said.

Back on campus, both teams continued their experiments, and students were often seen busy training in an open space on the university's South Lake campus. "In the process of experimentation and car building, vehicle engineering students have consolidated their knowledge of professional courses such as "Automobile Construction" and "Automobile Disassembly And Assembling Practice", and non-professional students have also gained an in-depth understanding of automobiles." Team instructor Zhang Yiming introduced.

Five days of fierce competition won a historic result

"The race lasted for 5 days, and every day there was a lot of content, it was more than just a simple racing race." Tian Zhewen introduced. According to him, the event is composed of a variety of static projects and dynamic project tests, including technical inspection, racing car design, cost and manufacturing; Dynamic events include climbing races, maneuver races, durability races, and more.

Team matches

The hardest event is the Endurance Race, which starts at 9 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m. During the endurance race, the fuel Baja race car needs to run laps on a complex 3,000-meter off-road track for 4 hours, and the result is determined by the number of laps. "More than 90 cars are running together on this track, and there are some faulty cars, and the cars and the cars will definitely interact with each other. The track was also very difficult to run, and everyone tensed their nerves during these four hours. Tian Zhewen introduced.

As the first team to start, the team car performed very well in the first 2 hours, even if the car often broke down on the track. The first time to make everyone nervous, the team suddenly received feedback from the racers that the three cars in front of them were intertwined, and one of the cars was rolling the tires that surrounded the track into its own tires, and the situation was very critical. Hearing about this situation, the team was very worried about the safety of the racing drivers. But at this time, the team's racing driver accelerated from the side and successfully bypassed the first crisis.

The second tense moment occurred 2 hours after the start of the run, at about 11:20, the team received a feedback from the driver that the rear cabin of the vehicle had a strange noise, the team was worried about the problem of the transmission system, immediately communicated with the driver, and the car drove into the maintenance area for inspection. The team maintenance team also rushed to the maintenance area for the first time, and after the car drove into the maintenance area, 7 people immediately picked up the equipment and raced against time to repair the car. In the end, the fuel Baja racing team finished the race with 31 laps and a second place finish.

After five days of fierce competition, the school's two Baja racing teams won the first prize of the country, among them, the electric Baja racing team E3 won the overall championship of the tram group, and the fuel Baja racing team U23 stood out from the traditional strong teams in the undergraduate group, and won the overall result of the second place and set a new best result. The two teams won a total of 7 individual awards, the highest number of single awards among the participating schools.

The Baha Competition of the Society of Automotive Engineers of China began in 2015 and was derived from the electric Baha'i category in 2019, and since participating in the competition in 2017, the school has won 5 national first prizes and 1 national second prize, which is a new high for the school. "Every year, a large number of outstanding students emerge from the competition, which has trained a large number of outstanding graduates for the Chinese automotive industry." Tian Zhewen said proudly.
