Attentive viewers will surely remember that on Valentine's Day this year, we announced that one of the most classic works of the silent film era, starring legendary actress Louise Brooks, would be screened. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the film's release, so this screening is of great significance. The unit that includes this film is the "Film History Recommendation" unit under the "SIFF Classic".
Since the birth of the prototype of curatorial ideas in 2018, SIFF officially launched the "Film History Recommendation" fixed unit this year, trying to review the film history of the past hundred years with today's vision, and to select recommended film history masterpieces from all over the world in ten years, rediscovering and defining classics.
Eager audiences are also speculating about what anniversaries will be launched in SIFF's classic "Film History Recommendation", and today I will introduce all the works in this unit at once: from the anti-war film "I Accuse" directed by French film master Abel Guns 100 years ago, to "Guan shan Feidu" directed by Western film master John Ford 80 years ago; from the Resistance movement film "The Silence of the Sea" directed by French film master Melville 70 years ago, to the comedy film "Yasujiro Ozu" directed by Japanese film master Yasujiro Ozu 60 years ago. From "Midnight Cowboy", which won the Oscar for Best Picture 50 years ago, to "Bronte Sisters" starring three beautiful french stars 40 years ago; from "Cinema Paradiso" 30 years ago when Italian film master Tornadore won the Cannes Jury Prize, to "Floating Rhapsody" directed by German film director Fayt Helmer 20 years ago, this large unit that runs through the history of cinema is gorgeously collected in "Fish Tank" by British female director Andrea Arnold 10 years ago.

Classic anti-war film by French film maestro Abel Guns. The film was conceived from friends around Gunns who participated in world war I, and with the encouragement of the boss of the Pathé Company, Charles Emi, Guns took a camera and went to the front line to shoot the battlefield and photograph the real situation of the famous Battle of St. Michael. Gunners uses human form to form the word "I accuse" at the beginning of the film, and at the end of the film, more than 2,000 real World War I soldiers are used to star in the famous "Return of the Dead" segment, becoming one of the most magnificent counter-battlefields in the history of cinema.

A milestone in the history of Westerns
One of the most classic Westerns by American film master John Ford, it was also the first of Ford's many works to shoot monument valley with the visual symbol of a Western. The film went unnoticed at first because the studios thought the high-cost Western was obsolete and Ford insisted on using John Wayne, who was still unknown at the time, as the lead role. After the film was released, it won two Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and Best Score, and John Wayne became a big star, and it ushered in a new era of Westerns. Orson Wells claimed to have watched the film no less than forty times in order to learn Ford's editing techniques.
The silence of the sea
The Silence of The Sea
- 1949 -
Crime Film Master's anti-war debut
The Silence of the Sea is a sensational short story published in 1942 that is as sacred as the Bible to French resistance fighters. In 1947, the French film master Jean-Pierre Melville put it on the screen without either authorial authorization or permission from the film union, and it took only 27 days to shoot. Upon learning of this, the author summoned several resistance fighters to form a jury, and if these people were not satisfied with the film, Melville had to burn the negatives on the spot. As a result, the film received unanimous praise, and the subsequent release made Melville famous.

A rare comedy film by Ozu
"Good Morning" is the second color film directed by Japanese film master Yasujiro Ozu, depicting community life in the suburbs of Tokyo. Ozu loosely refurbishes his 1932 silent film masterpiece, I Was Born, But... and through the thread of buying a television set, he wanders the world of adults and children, and uses quiet humor to exhaust the gradual changes in the values of Japanese middle-class families during the economic take-off period. The film was completed by Shochiku in 2013 for 4K scanning and restoration, and the film's post-color grading was directed by Masashi Komori, the cinematographer of Family Suffering.

The only X-rated best picture in Oscar history
"Midnight Cowboy" tells the story of the friendship between two fallen people struggling at the bottom of New York society, when the unknown John Walter and the budding Dustin Hoffman contributed quite a superb performance, both of which were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film eventually won three Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Because the film was rated X in the U.S. film rating that year, it became the only X-rated film in film history to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

The film was shortlisted for the main competition section of that year's Cannes Film Festival.

A classic work known to fans all over the world, Italian film master Giuseppe Tornadore pays tribute to movies, film screenings and film fans by depicting a friendship between a small-town cinema projectionist and a child. In 1989, he won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and later won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
