On January 3, the three major telecom operators started the A-share New Year well, China Unicom rose to the limit, China Mobile rose 6.32%, China Telecom rose 3.82%, and the trend in the next few days was also very gratifying.

Since 2022, due to inflationary pressure, repeated new crown epidemics and geopolitical conflicts, the performance of the global capital market has not been calm, and China's capital market has also faced many tests, but the A-share performance of the three major telecom operators, especially the recent performance, is remarkable.

"Just as a ruler can't measure three-dimensional space and watch a 3D movie, you must first wear 3D glasses, you can no longer look at the telecommunications industry with old eyes." Liu Liehong, chairman of China Unicom, once said, "The telecom industry is comprehensively upgrading on the new track of digital economy, and investing in the telecom industry is investing in a definite future, a definite value, and a definite return!" ”

Strive to be the first: Sail to the new blue ocean of digital economy

At present, the digital economy has become the main form after the agricultural economy and industrial economy. It is estimated that by 2025, the proportion of mainland digital economy in GDP will increase from 39.8% in 2021 to more than 50%, of which the scale of the information service market will increase from 12.5 trillion yuan in 2021 to 22.8 trillion yuan. Basic telecom operators have natural genes such as network, data, and technology, and have accumulated valuable experience in the integration and innovation of digital intelligence applications, and have become the backbone of the development of the digital economy.

China Mobile has clarified its new positioning as a world-class information service technology innovation company, fulfilled its mission of supporting the digital economy to become stronger, better and bigger, and comprehensively made efforts to "two new types": on the one hand, it systematically builds a new information infrastructure focusing on 5G, computing power networks, and smart middle offices; On the other hand, we will innovate and build a new information service system of "connection + computing power + capability".

China Telecom has fully implemented the "cloud transformation and digital transformation" strategy, accelerated the construction of digital information infrastructure with "cloud-network integration" as the core feature, and fully undertaken the "East Data and West Computing" project, and the industrial digital revenue reached nearly 100 billion yuan. And put forward the goal of "building a science and technology enterprise with independent control of key core technologies and entering the first camp of national science and technology innovation enterprises".

China Unicom has upgraded its new strategy for the digital economy, firmly sailed from traditional operators to the new blue ocean of digital economy, focused on paving the way, promoting applications and ensuring security for the digital economy, established 9 major industries and 10 major corps, laid out 17 professional subsidiaries and 19 industrial Internet companies, and actively built a capability generation model of "one connectivity, integrated capability aggregation, and integrated operation services".

Strengthen the foundation: Accelerate the creation of a new 5G industry ecosystem

Network infrastructure is still the basic disk and biggest advantage of the three major operators.

The "Economic Operation of the Communications Industry from January to November 2022" released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shows that the construction of 5G networks in the mainland is steadily advancing. By the end of November, the total number of 5G base stations reached 2.287 million, a net increase of 862,000 from the end of the previous year, accounting for 21.1% of the total number of mobile base stations. More importantly, under the promotion of a good policy system, on the two "tracks" of 2C and 2B, the mainland 5G application has formed a systematic promotion system, showing a large-scale development trend, and a new 5G industry ecological pattern has been laid out.

It is reported that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will work with relevant ministries and commissions and local governments to focus on promoting 5G applications in 15 industries in the three major areas of information consumption, real economy and people's livelihood services, create a new ecology of deep integration, achieve breakthroughs in the depth and breadth of 5G applications in key areas, build the dual pillars of technology industry and standard system, and gradually form a development situation of 5G applications "sailing away".

In 2022, China Mobile opened more than 1.27 million 5G base stations, built the largest 5G private network across six provinces and cities and the country, and expanded more than 16,000 5G commercial cases. China Unicom and China Telecom have opened a total of 1 million 5G shared base stations, achieving continuous 5G network coverage in townships and above. Up to now, China Unicom has built a total of 12,000 5G large-scale application projects, covering 40 major changes in the national economy; China Telecom has built more than 3,000 5G customized network projects and nearly 9,000 5G industry application projects, and formed a series of typical applications such as smart mines, smart factories, smart cities, and smart healthcare.

2022 is a significant year for China Radio and Television, the fourth largest operator in China. As of September 2022, all 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in China, excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, have opened radio and television 5G network services. In this year, China Radio and Television completed the construction of 480,000 700MHz base stations through joint construction and sharing with China Mobile. From July to the end of the year, there have been more than 5 million users in the "192" segment of China Radio and Television, and the advantages of 700MHz 5G network coverage have gradually emerged.

Emerge: Accurately take the new direction of pulse cloud business

The data shows that in addition to basic telecom services, the three major operators are actively developing emerging services such as big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, of which cloud computing revenue (January-November 2022) increased by 124.8% year-on-year.

According to the "China Public Cloud Services Market (First Half of 2022) Tracker" report released by International Data Corporation (IDC), the overall size of China's public cloud service market (IaaS/PaaS/SaaS) reached US$16.58 billion in the first half of 2022. Operators have emerged to maintain high growth and investment in the cloud computing field.

Specifically, in the IaaS market, Tianyi Cloud ranked third with a share of 11.0%, an increase of 0.7% over the second half of 2021; In the IaaS + PaaS market, Tianyi Cloud ranked fourth with a share of 9.4%, an increase of 0.5% over the second half of 2021. Mobile cloud public cloud (laaS + PaaS) service market share ranking moved one place to 6th; The year-on-year growth rate was 102%, ranking first among the top 10 cloud service providers.

At the end of July 2022, China's first state-owned assets supervision cloud service was officially announced. As a national team for cloud computing, the state-owned assets supervision cloud is mainly led by China Telecom, and jointly established by a number of central enterprises such as CETC and China Electronics. With the official launch and rollout of the national cloud, operators' market position in the cloud service industry has become more prominent.

It is reported that the launch of the state-owned assets supervision cloud has released a clear signal, that is, to integrate the cloud computing resources of central enterprises, achieve core technology breakthroughs, support the network information system, and build a healthy cloud ecosystem.

According to the first-half performance report, in the first half of 2022, mobile cloud revenue was 23.4 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 103.6%; Tianyi Cloud's revenue was 28.082 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 100.8%; Unicom Cloud's revenue was 18.7 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 143%. The "three clouds" all grew with a year-on-year momentum of more than 100%, and the growth rate was much higher than the industry average. On the whole, the total annual revenue of "Three Clouds" exceeds 100 billion yuan.

At the beginning of 2022, the three major operators gathered in A-shares, realizing the close integration of the capital market and the customer market, allowing customers to share the development results of the industry. It is conceivable that after embracing the digital economy, the three major operators will bring new value through new positioning and new opportunities.
