History

The earliest inhabitants of Dominica were Arawak Indians.

After 1000 AD: Carib Indians from the northern part of the South American continent conquer and expel the Arawaks, taking control of the island.

1493 AD: Columbus named it "Dominica" when he landed on the island on November 3 on his second voyage to the Americas. Over the next century, European colonists made several attempts to occupy the island, but were unable to do so because of the stubborn resistance of the Caribs and the treacherous geography.

1632 AD: French colonists invade. The British followed.

1748: Britain and France reach an agreement recognizing Dominica as neutral and Carib-owned.

1759 AD: Dominica is occupied by the British.

1763: Under the Treaty of Paris, Dominica is transferred to Great Britain.

After 1778: Dominica changed hands between England and France.

1805 AD: French occupiers burn down the city of Rosso. In the same year, Britain took ownership of the island for a "ransom" of £12,000.

1815: The Treaty of Vienna finally recognizes Dominica as British.

1958~1962: Dominica was a member of the West Indies Federation.

March 1967: Introduction of "internal self-government" and becoming a British "associated state"

November 3, 1978: Dominica declares its independence and is named the Commonwealth of Dominica, a member of the British Commonwealth.
