Ba Jin, born in 1904 in Chengdu, Sichuan, is a contemporary Chinese writer who was awarded the honorary title of "People's Writer" by the State Council.

Barkin's representative works include the novels "Destruction", "Home", "Spring", "Autumn" and "Love Trilogy" (Fog, Rain and Electricity).

Created in 1933, Home is the opening work of the Riptide Trilogy, considered Barkin's most famous masterpiece and one of the best-selling works in new Chinese literature, and was selected as one of the top 100 novels of the Chinese in the 20th century (8th).

Barkin "Home": Break the shackles, and there is hope in life

As a classic literary masterpiece, "Home" has been reprinted dozens of times since its inception, and has been adapted into television, movies and dramas many times, which has a profound impact. Mr. Barkin once proudly said: "Time seems to be running, forty years have passed, fifty years have passed, the publishing house has to reprint them, and my books have not yet died."

Most of Barkin's works are mainly based on the theme of family life, which reflects the current situation of society at that time, of which "Home" is the most important.

Barkin said: "'Home' is a realistic novel, the characters in the book are all I have loved or hated, and some of the scenes in the book are still seen or experienced by my own eyes." I wrote Home like digging a grave of memories. When I was a child, I was often forced to witness some lovely young lives being destroyed and ending tragically. ”

"I cherish them, and for their sake, I should also rebel against this unfair fate!"

This is the motivation for writing Home.

"Home" is based on the high mansion of the big family in Chengdu, Sichuan in the early 20th century, focusing on the collision of old and new ideas and the development and change of fate after the collision.

Three brothers

The supreme ruler of the feudal family, headed by the old lady, was ruthless and ruthless. He arranged the marriage of Juexin and Juemin, and forced the young Mingfeng to be a concubine for the old man Feng Leshan... Every word and deed he says must be carried out unconditionally! No different voices, still less resistance.

The defenders of the feudal family represented by Gao Juexin and Gao Keming, both of them have received higher education, Gao Keming even studied in Japan, is a famous local barrister, but for the words of The old lady Gao, he does not distinguish between right and wrong, and obeys his words. As the eldest son and eldest grandson, Gao Juexin cannot be the master of marriage, the work cannot be the master, everything is decided by the elders, and he does not dare to have a trace of the right to speak. It was as if it wasn't his life and didn't need him to live.

The two brothers, Gao Juemin and Gao Juehui, are the inheritors of new ideas and new cultures. They hate the "home" that has lived for more than ten years, watching the young lives around them struggle and suffer in the cage of etiquette, without youth and happiness, and become victims of the feudal system again and again... So they rebelled, fought for their lives with their own faint light, and finally got what they wanted.

At the end of the novel, the life of the non-rebellious Jue Xin is ruined: he is forced to lose his cousin Mei of the Green Plum Bamboo Horse, which ends in her depression; she marries the wife that her father has set for him, but because of the "disaster of blood and light", she is forced to send her to the countryside to give birth, resulting in her death. The two most important women in life are gone because of him, and he helped Juehui run away from home in pain, which is a comfort to his life.

And Jue Min and Jue Hui, who were fighting hard, won. Jue Min got rid of the marriage of Mrs. Gao and came together with his favorite Qin cousin; Jue Hui also left home and went to Shanghai to find a new world that belonged to him.

Different people under the same family, because of the collision and confrontation of different ideas, the wheel of life has run in different directions. Some people die in pain, some people leave with hope, and some people are better off dead than dead.

The author once said about the creation of "Home" that his purpose in writing this work was "I accuse".

He complained about the destruction of young life, the cruelty of feudal parents, and the evils of the feudal system. Through this accusation, I hope that every living life can break through the cage in the oppression and bravely move forward in the storm.

Mingfeng rebelled, in order not to marry the old man Feng Leshan, she gave her 17-year-old soul to the clear and calm lake, away from the people who could not be loved, and away from this cannibalistic world, which was not another victory.

Juemin rebelled, he ran away from home, refused the marriage arranged by the old lady, although he was afraid and powerless, but in the end he still "had lovers together".

Juehui rebelled, he said goodbye to his relatives, left the home that made him feel depressed, and resolutely went to Shanghai, where the future was unknown, to pursue his dreams and his life.

In the end, the wheel of fate takes away those who are brave, but those who remain are still trapped there, struggling, suffering, and perhaps soon the fate of death will follow.

Cruel fate is like a mountain weighing down on them, compromise, can only suffer all; resistance, perhaps a little life.

Through "Home", Ba Jin sent out a long-buried roar to the feudal rites, and he tried to wake up thousands of oppressed people in China with the roar of "light". As he wished, countless oppressed people gradually awakened in their slumber, and the light of the stars illuminated the dim human world little by little.

China in the early 20th century was a society full of war and revolution, oppression and resistance. In the confrontation between the old and new forces, a large number of excellent writers and works have emerged, and the reason why "Home" can win a corner of many works is inseparable from its distinctive artistic characteristics.

[Breeze] to see the big in the small, to peek at the whole picture.

Based on a family, the author presents the darkness, rise and fall of the High Mansion a little more realistically. Although it is a bit of writing about the Gao Mansion, it also integrates the social background and the appearance of the times at that time, so that the whole work has a broader space for extension.

For example, at the beginning of the novel, there is a description of the wind and snow night road: the wind blows tightly, and the snow flakes fly in the air like torn cotton wool... There are pedestrians and palanquins carried by two people on the street. They couldn't fight the wind and snow, and they showed a look of cowering... The wind toyed with the umbrella... As if to warn them: the wind and snow will control the world for a long time, and the bright spring will not come.

The author uses the wind and snow as a metaphor for the cruel feudal system at that time, under their oppression, the people at the bottom are like passers-by in the snow and wind, so small and powerless.

Another example: When the war ended, the lively high mansion ushered in the temporary "company commander's wife", Ma Ben, who had a "box cannon" around his waist, had an arrogant face, which was also reflected from the side in that chaotic era, as long as there was an opportunity, anyone could "bully the others".

As the richest man in the North City, Gao Gongguan has a big face and great privileges, he can bully anyone weaker than him at will, as a famous barrister in the provincial city, Gao Keming, with the help of the Gao family's power and his own strength, he did not bow his head to others before. But today, a small "Ma Ben" can point fingers at him and issue orders.

Not all suffering people do not know how to resist, and they are willing to be oppressed simply because they do not have the strength to resist in their hands. As a high-ranking family standing on the commanding heights of power, didn't he also succumb to a small "box cannon"?

[Breeze] The language is straightforward and expressive.

In the book, the author uses simple language to show every detail in the article, vividly showing every character's personality and inner development, so that people are immersed in the scene and empathize with it.

When Mingfeng committed suicide to see the last side of Juehui, the author wrote:

She looked at the light with greedy eyes, and a desire gradually caught her. She wanted to run into the room desperately, knelt before him, cried to him about her pain, and begged him to save her from her misfortune. She was willing to be his slave forever, to love him, to serve her.

She decided to run in. however...... It was pitch black in front of me, and the lights in the room suddenly went out. Her eyes were wide open, but she couldn't see anything. She couldn't pull her feet and stood alone in the darkness. The relentless darkness came from all sides...

Barkin "Home": Break the shackles, and there is hope in life

The author did not use flowery and exaggerated words, but described Mingfeng's helpless but eager to be saved before her death, as if you were her, standing with her in front of the window, looking at the light, constantly hesitating between life and death, and when she plucked up enough courage to catch up with the light of life, she was greeted by a merciless darkness...

Tear-jerking, instant empathy.

"Home" through the description of the fate of the entire family, let us follow the encounter of the protagonist or joy or sorrow. In this family, there are too many sad fates, and it is worth pondering to watch one after another fresh young lives under the pressure of feudal etiquette, but out of different fate trajectories.

The dead are dead, but the living see the hope of a new life:

Only by resisting can we truly live.

It's hard to resist, but it's easier than living in torment. Only by resisting can we comfort the youth that was once abandoned, and can we comfort the relatives and lovers who have died.

In the preface to Home, Barkin says:

"Life is not a tragedy, it is a struggle. Why should we have such a life? Because it's to conquer it! ”

"I'm still young, I'm going to live, I'm going to conquer life. I know that the torrent of life will not stop, and see where it carries me! ”

Life goes on, the struggle goes on!

In the face of difficulties, some people choose to compromise, some people choose to fight, what about you?
