According to British media reports, on October 7, local time, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that although the "case Breakers" claimed that they had determined the identity of the "zodiac killer", the serial murder case is still unsolved.
Earlier, a team of more than 40 experts, The Solver, released a report saying the "Zodiac Killer" was Gary Francis Poste, a U.S. Air Force veteran in the eastern region of California, who died in 2018. According to the "Solver" analysis, some pictures show that the scar on Post's forehead matches the scar on the sketch of the "Zodiac Killer". It is reported that the "case solvers" are composed of former US law enforcement investigators, journalists, and military intelligence personnel.
As soon as the news came out, it immediately caused an uproar. Subsequently, the FBI responded in a media statement: "The case is still under investigation and there is no new development." Detectives from the San Francisco Murder Team also said that in order to confirm the identity of the "Zodiac Killer", there must be conclusive evidence, such as handwriting and fingerprint samples, and the analysis of the "case solver" lacks this evidence.
In this regard, the "cracker" did not buy it, and revealed that the FBI and san Francisco police had a set of DNA evidence, but refused to compare it with Post's DNA.
The Zodiac Killer is a serial killer who committed multiple homicides in northern California in the late 1960s and killed four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 29 in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Boyesa and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969. Until 1974, he sent many provocative letters to the media and signed them. Although the "Zodiac Killer" claimed in a letter to the media that he killed 37 people, according to the results of the investigation, he only killed 7 people, of which 2 survived.
On August 29, 2008, a member of the public named Dennis Kaufman found many clues related to the case while sorting through the relics of his stepfather Jack Tarrance. Dennis found that the black box left behind by Jack contained a black turban with the same cross symbol on the letter that the "Zodiac Killer" had written to the police. Also found was a blood-stained knife and photographs of the victims. In addition, Jack also left a letter in which he admitted that he was the "Zodiac Killer". Dennis then compared Jack's body shape, appearance, and handwriting at different times, and wrote a bunch of stories about his process of collecting evidence related to Jack and the "Zodiac Killer", and even gave a high-profile interview to the television media to present what he thought was favorable evidence. Dennis's argument, however, was quickly dismissed by experts.
In December 2020, the FBI announced that the 340-character password sent to the San Francisco Chronicle by the "Zodiac Killer" on November 8, 1969, had been cracked, and the encrypted letter read, "I hope you have a lot of fun in capturing me." I'm not afraid of gas chambers because it will send me to heaven faster because I now have enough slaves to work for me. However, it does not help to confirm the identity of the "Zodiac Killer".
