The Hong Kong Police Tactical Unit (PTU) is well known for being regularly on screen. The hats worn by its members are not the big brimmed hats of ordinary policemen, but the blue berets, so this unit is also known as the "blue hat". Personnel are organized into temporary teams
The PTU was created in 1958 as the "Police Training Detachment" and in 1968 as the "Police Mobile Unit", and its members have been officially wearing blue berets since 1969. The PTU was trained and managed in a semi-military format, with personnel growing from just two squads to more than 1,000 people. The task has also shifted from riot control to dealing with internal security issues and large crowd control activities in Hong Kong.
Unlike the usual police force, PTU members are not fixed, but are formed on an ad hoc basis. Currently, the PTU has a total of 6 companies, each divided into 4 platoons with 41 people per platoon. PTU members are regularly drawn from the Force and are commanded by a Superintendent of Police, assisted by a Chief Inspector, a Sheriff in charge of administrative and supply matters, and a Sheriff in charge of the operation and management of all vehicles. The company has 170 people. Five of the six companies are stationed in five regions of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon East, Kowloon West, New Territories South and New Territories North, and one is Foxtrot, which was trained at Fanling Training Camp.
PTU's British wheeled armored vehicles, nicknamed "Killing God", have been replaced by environmentally friendly French armored vehicles since the summer of 2009 due to their long service time and excessive exhaust emissions. PTU team members who have just finished graduation from the Pink Collar Training Camp area will be sent to work in a general district, replacing the PTU company originally stationed in the district. After completing the mission, the PTU members are disbanded, and each of them is integrated into the various units of the police district to which they belong, and then the training of new PTU members is reorganized. This constant cycle makes the mobile unit extremely flexible in its operation. In doing so, the Hong Kong police actually hope that every police officer in Hong Kong can receive professional training from the PTU, so that if a large-scale emergency occurs, a large number of experienced PTU members can be immediately mobilized, which is also the place where the mobile force deserves its name. Currently, about 80% of officers in the Hong Kong Force have received PTU training.

The scope of responsibility differs from the EU
Many people confuse the PTU with the Emergency Unit (EU) because the PTU is close to the EU's attire, wears the same beret, and has street patrol duties to handle emergencies.
However, the PTU is similar to the police badge worn by the EU, except that the PTU's badge is decorated after it, commonly known as the "tofu cloud", while the EU's does not. In addition to the difference in wearing, the two are very different in terms of the scope of responsibility. The EU is a divisional management unit, is the frontline force of the Hong Kong Police Force, in addition to the general patrol work, every time there is a case, including the call of the 999 emergency number, they will rush to the scene as soon as possible to deal with the emergency, hunt down the bandits and maintain order on the scene. In addition, the EU undertakes special tasks such as assisting the Correctional Services Department in the escort of Class A criminals and maintaining order through large demonstrations. The PTU, on the other hand, is centrally assigned by the Headquarters and is primarily responsible for internal security in Hong Kong, with specific responsibilities including providing a reserve force for the Police Force to cope with sudden emergencies such as wind, fire, riots, etc.; providing emergency assistance to the various police districts, such as horse racing days, ball games, public order and crowd control for major festivals and patrols; and teaching internal security (riot prevention) expertise to all levels of the Force. Although the PTU usually patrols the streets, it is generally a group of 4 people, which has a greater deterrent effect. The PATROL of the EU is generally a group of 1 to 2 people. If there are mass gatherings, marches, etc., there will generally be pTU to control the crowd. In addition, if there is a major incident, such as a gunfight or search for pornography, the Criminal Department will also mobilize PTU to assist in the search for evidence at the scene and maintain order.
In other words, the difference between the duties of the PTU and the EU is that in the general period of riots, the EU will form a riot prevention team to carry out the riot control work before the PTU arrives, and then the PTU will be present to deal with the conflict; in addition, the EU will receive the 999 alarm call to deal with the emergency, while the PTU will not use it. According to the mainland's understanding of the duties of the police, the EU belongs to the patrol police, while the PTU belongs to the armed police mobile unit.

Extensive training and strict requirements
Since its inception, the PTU has maintained a spirit of strict discipline, rigorous training and careful action, with the aim of producing good police officers who truly serve the public through such training.
In order to fully meet the requirements of PTU's tasks, the training content of PTU team members is more extensive than that of ordinary police officers, including riot prevention training; skills training such as "suspension jump" and "pressure point control method"; physical training such as running, swimming, endurance, and dumbbell lifting; shooting training at different distances; crowd management training to assist in the smooth holding of demonstrations and large-scale activities; mountain search skills for anti-smuggling work on the mountain, and other training such as airport large-scale air disasters, hostage-taking, and protection of politicians. Physical training accounts for 17% of these trainings, as during the training period, participants have to deal with many difficult and highly physically exhausted skills. When performing these tasks, trainees often have to carry equipment weighing about 4.5 kg into battle, if there is not enough physical strength, how can they cope with these arduous training tasks?
The "pressure point control method" in skills training is a confrontation control technique imported from the United States, and it is also a technique that subdues the troublemaker with the lowest force and makes them incapable of resisting.

Crowd control skills are an important part of PTU training, which mainly includes "crowd management exercise training" and "violent crowd control training" to deal with riots and riots. The "Crowd Management Exercise Training" is the correct application of general public order and crowd control skills, as well as relevant laws and guidelines for public activities, while the "Violent Crowd Control Training" focuses on the use of different tactics to achieve the purpose of crowd control. In addition, because the mob may use highly lethal weapons such as wooden sticks, stones, and even petrol bombs, how to effectively disperse the mob and arrest targets is also one of the important topics in the training of PTU team members.
Fully equipped, full of majesty
As a front-line force, the PTU is equipped with a variety of different types of weapons and sophisticated riot gear to meet the needs of different occasions. The Remington 870P shotgun, AR15 automatic rifle, M373 rubber bullet, etc. are all essential equipment for PTU. Hand-throwing tear gas is also an important weapon of the PTU, usually used by members of the first platoon closest to the mob to control the scene.
Other equipment equipped by the PTU team members includes: pepper sprayer, telescopic baton, polycarbonate police round shield and long shield (police long shield height 1.65m, can be combined into a house-type defense line), MP-6 light fire extinguishing canister, "Saxon" police armored vehicle, etc. The basic equipment is riot helmet, riot boots, and police armor.
Excellent performance is commendable
One of the most important tasks of the PTU, as a unit that spearheaded the riots, was to control the demonstrators during the 6th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in December 2005. At that time, a large number of Korean peasants organized demonstrators to continuously storm the defense line built by the police in various ways, and finally the PTU successfully repelled the demonstrators with superior police strength, full armament and strong tactics, which was rumored to be a good story.
Due to the excellent performance of the "Blue Hat" and its prominent position in the Police Force, the Hong Kong people know that there is a major incident as long as they see the PTU moving, so they are known as the "nemesis of crime" in the minds of Hong Kong citizens.
