Modern people are generally more open-minded, and it is normal to have been in love many times or even more than one marriage, but it was quite rare in China more than 100 years ago and was less easily accepted by society. In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic period, there was a strange woman named "Yu Meiyan" in China, who bravely pursued love all her life and tried to break through the shackles of the feudal system on women, but chose to end her life at the age of 28, like a shooting star across the sky, fleeting.

In 1900, Yu Meiyan was born in Taishan County, Guangdong, her father was a local pawn merchant, her mother was born in a scholarly family, her family was considered good, and she also received a good education. At the beginning, this marriage was still a good story, but later, with the economic problems of the Tan family, her husband went to the United States for a long time to do business, Yu Meiyan was left alone, and the discord with her in-laws and sister-in-law became increasingly serious, and Yu Meiyan, who could not bear such days, decided to leave her husband's house first and go to Guangzhou to find another life.

Unfortunately, not long after Yu Meiyan arrived in Guangzhou, she was involved in the assassination case of Cheng Biguang, then chief of the navy, Yu Meiyan was arrested as a suspicious element, although under the running of her mother's family, Yu Meiyan was quickly released, but this incident led to her being severed by her husband's family, and her father also felt that his face was dull, and sent Yu Meiyan to the Xiyi Institute in a fit of anger for a series of labor skills training, hoping to change her temperament. As a result, I didn't expect that the Xiyi Institute not only failed to help Yu Meiyan, but made her life go on a more unruly road.

Spitted by her ex-husband's family and mother's family, Yu Meiyan began to be fascinated by the life of dressing up gorgeously, going in and out of the wind and moon places, and also made a lot of so-called rich second generations, for the man she likes, Yu Meiyan will be happy to spend the Spring Festival with each other, but if it is unpleasant, no matter how much money she has, she will not spend the night with her, at this time, she is alone, and she no longer wants to think much about secular etiquette, just wants to live a dashing life.

Later, Yu Meiyan met a rich businessman surnamed He from Hong Kong, and the two were very attracted at first sight, Yu Meiyan, who was only in her 20s at the time, was as beautiful as a flower and flourishing, while He Nan was a 40-year-old middle-aged man with a family. He Nan sympathized with Yu Meiyan's suffering, so he let Yu be his second room, and after a period of marriage, Yu Meiyan lived quite well, but she did not change her luxurious and communicative life because of this, and as a result, the marriage did not last long, and was published by the man and dissolved on the grounds of "bohemian and extravagant".

After the failure of the two marriages, Yu Meiyan met the son of the then county magistrate of Nanhai County, and he fell in love with Yu Meiyan at first sight, even though his family persuaded him bitterly, saying that Yu Meiyan was notorious and absolutely could not be engaged to each other for life, but the son of the county magistrate still insisted on this love. However, the man's parents did not want to sit back and watch their son have anything to do with Yu Meiyan, so they humiliated and separated the two with a scheme, and Yu Meiyan was disheartened and decided to leave the United States.

Yu Meiyan unexpectedly reunited with her first husband in the United States, but at this time, she is no longer the simple Tan family young wife of the year, but a courtesan with a famous name, not to mention continuing the front edge with her, even slightly contaminated Yu Meiyan, her ex-husband avoided it, and Yu Meiyan, who was hit, traveled far again and returned to the homeland that made her heart ache - China.

Returning to Guangzhou from San Francisco, USA, Yu Meiyan basically did not expect life, gradually developed world-weary thoughts, but was unwilling to leave like this, she wrote her life into a diary, named "Modern Love Letter" (also called romantic love letter), the book described in detail her emotional entanglement and physical relationship with many men, thinking that she was writing with her body, in that still quite conservative era, Yu Meiyan's move can be described as deviant, she met 3 other women who were as bold and uninhibited as her, The four often go in and out of major dance halls together, drink, have fun, make friends, and even have the nickname "Four King Kongs".

However, even though she advocated sexual freedom and physical liberation and did not want to be bound by traditional rituals, Yu Meiyan still felt tired of being addicted to alcohol and being alone for too long, and even raised the idea of escaping into the empty door, but was politely rejected for the reason that "the dust is not gone, and the heart is not dead". In April 1928, Yu Meiyan jumped into the sea without warning on a ship from Hong Kong to Shanghai, ending her short life of only 28 years. It is reported that in her suicide note, she wrote that after ten years of floating and sinking in the dirty earthly world, there were many readers, and she finally failed to marry Zhu Chen's good, believing that it was useless to leave this residual life, and if she left this turbid world, wash away this filth, she might be a pure woman in the next life.

Although Yu Meiyan did not want to submit to the traditional social shackles, she was ultimately unable to fight the old system, and chose to end her life early, whether it was born at an opportune time, or caused by her personal moths to the fire and blindly pursuing freedom, no one can say for sure; But born in a conservative era, Yu Meiyan has the least conservative ideas, although her life seems to be a tragedy, but it has somewhat inspired the women of that era and gradually put aside the baggage of the old era.
