German realist Leibole's hazy and atmospheric work appreciation
DOMESTIC ADVICE
The art works and art schools of the 19th century are really vast, and we know that France at that time had set off a wave of realism, and the person we are most familiar with is the figure of the realist school.
If we shift our gaze from France to Germany, we will be surprised to find that realism has also taken root here.
Wilhelm Leibel ( 23 October 1844 – 4 December 1900 ) was a German realist painter who, like other realist painters, was good at depicting people at the bottom of society.

Leebre was born into a musical family in Cologne, where the famous Gothic cathedral of the Middle Ages, if memory serves, is home to Cologne Cathedral and can be introduced in the next issue if anyone is interested.

Leibel began to learn painting from local painters in 1861, and since Munich has always been an important center of art in Germany, as an art practitioner, Leibel certainly wanted to study at a higher education institution.

The 21-year-old Leiber also met Courbet, especially after watching Courbet's masterpiece "Stonework", he was deeply inspired and admired the French realist leader even more.

Perhaps because of this encounter or Courbet's recommendation, in short, Leble came to Paris in 1869, where he also interacted with progressive artists, such as Manet, but unfortunately stayed in Paris for only 9 months, which had a profound impact on his later artistic creation.

However, in 1870, when Impressionism rose and gradually became glorious, it was inevitable that Leble was at the forefront of art at that time, communicating with those progressive artists, but after he returned to Munich in 1870, he turned to realism, was he not influenced by Impressionism?

After returning to Germany, he lived in Munich until 1873, then moved to the Bavarian countryside, where he lived with peasants, depicting the daily lives of his neighbors without sentimentality and anecdotes, and his painting style changed from sketchy to more elaborate.
His precise outline and detailed depiction of Three Women in the Church at the time are reminiscent of the style of Hans Holbein the Younger, and later his paintings combined this fine style with the bold brushwork he adopted in the 80s.
The Spinners

This style of painting is not accidental, and like many painters, he is dissatisfied with the academic school and has a deep respect for the Dutch school and Rembrandt. Most of his early works were portraits, influencing the German painting scene of the time with his delicate character portrayal and strong contrast between light and dark.

At that time, Leibel had already shown a style imitating the style of ancient German painters, and at this time he also began to relax the form, using bold brushstrokes to paint the subject of objects on darker backgrounds.
In the genre of realism, Leiber depicts a couple of ages with a huge age difference, one old and one young, maintaining their relationship may be a material factor of reality, the old man obtains a young and strong wife with money, and the young girl marries the old man to obtain material wealth.
Remember when there was a very famous "Disproportionate Marriage" in history? It was the work of a Russian painter, and we'll talk about that painter next time.

It is said that Leibel never made drafts when painting, but began to paint directly with color, similar to the style of the Impressionists, and from this point of view of the short trip to Paris, Impressionism still left traces on him.

But the object he depicts must be directly observed with the eye, consistent with the views of the realist school, so, from the influence of realism and impressionism, there are some of both, but more or less a problem.
Later, a small circle of painters was formed around Leibul, known as the "Leible Group".

He also produced one of the few etchings in the country, also in a very fine style, his charcoal paintings with large contrasts of light and shadow, as if painting with an oil brush, he painted diligently until his death, including moving to several small towns, and died in Würzburg in 1900.
