At the opening ceremony of Tesla AI Day 2022, Tesla CEO Musk ended his opening remarks as quickly as possible - "We have come a long way" - and then let his first generation of AI robots take to the stage.
His AI robot isn't just a model with a robotic appearance, as it was last year. Instead, Tesla unveiled a functioning robot at its launch this year, albeit with bare cables and a bit wobbly. According to Musk, this is the first time it has worked without "any supports, cranes, mechanical mechanisms or cables."
Musk said he expects the company to be ready to take orders within three to five years. The joint venture could overtake Tesla's electric vehicle business.
The company is committed to designing and manufacturing mass-market robots that will also be tested by working in its factories, which will set it apart from other manufacturers who have experimented with humanoid robots. Musk has worked hard to position Tesla as a leader in artificial intelligence, not just as part of a company that makes "cool cars."
Musk said the experimental test robot, with bare wires and electronics, was developed in February and walked slowly onto the stage, turning around and waving at the cheering crowd at the event. Musk also played a video of it doing simple tasks at a production station at its California plant, such as watering plants, handling boxes and lifting metal rods.
