United Nations, 12 Sep (Xinhua) -- The closing session of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly was held on 12 September. The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, Shahid, delivered a speech, and Hungarian diplomat Klecht was sworn in as President of the 77th Session of the General Assembly, taking over the gavel from Shahid.

In his speech, Shahid stressed the importance of maintaining hope. He said the COVID-19 pandemic was raging, armed conflict was ongoing, and millions of people were facing hunger and poverty. The climate crisis is deep. The system of multilateralism has suffered an impact. All the crises seem to be deepening, but the real crisis is the loss of hope. Maintaining hope is not blind optimism or selective disregard, but rather recognizing and affirming the potential of human beings, recognizing that human beings working together can do miracles in the best possible condition.
Speaking at the meeting, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the multilateral system will face an unprecedented test during the next session of the UnIpoterm, and multilateralism is the only hope for mankind. He called on all countries to follow the path of diplomacy, negotiation and compromise. Guterres praised Shahid for his vision and leadership and looked forward to working with Klech.
At a press conference after the closing session, Klecht introduced the focus of his work during his presidency of the General Assembly: defending the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations; Significant progress in sustainable transformation; Seek comprehensive and systematic solutions; Scientifically guide decision-making; Strengthen solidarity. He said he would work to build bridges of communication between Member States and make the work of the General Assembly more impactful.
The 77th session of the General Assembly is scheduled to open on 13 September.
