On September 10, local time, a shipwreck occurred in the waters off Kaikoura on New Zealand's South Island, and a fishing boat carrying 11 people capsized after colliding with an unknown object. Police confirmed that 5 people died in the accident and 6 others were rescued.
There are reports that the collision with the vessel was a whale, but the police have not confirmed the news, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Kaikoura Mayor Craig McKeller said the water was so calm at the time of the accident that it was thought that a whale had surfaced from under the boat.
Kaikoura is a popular whale watching destination. Many merchants offer boat or helicopter tours, allowing visitors to see whales, dolphins and other marine life up close.
