In 2021, the story of Chinese Asian elephants moving north and returning to the south has touched the hearts of hundreds of millions of Chinese people, and has also aroused the keen attention of the whole society to the protection and habitat of Chinese Asian elephants. According to the data, wild elephants belong to the national first-class protected animals, and the Chinese Asian elephant population is currently about 300, and they live in groups in the wild as a family unit. Through the efforts of all sectors of society in the past year, the number and population of Asian elephants in Yunnan and the ecological environment have been healthy and developed. In addition, Yunnan Province has also set up an expert committee on the protection of Asian elephants to coordinate the investigation and monitoring of Asian elephants and their habitats, population structure and genetic characteristics, human-elephant conflict mechanisms, environmental and land carrying capacity, habitat restoration and food source land transformation, and other systematic research results, and the relevant research results are at the world's leading level.
Asian elephants are the "umbrella species" of forest ecosystems and "rainforest engineers", so it is necessary to protect not only the population of Asian elephants, but also the forest ecosystems of tropical rainforests. At the opening ceremony of World Elephant Day, an eye-catching link was the "Yunnan Asian Elephant Genome Big Data Platform and Science Popularization" project was officially established as an Asian elephant research and protection project, and Zhang Zhizhong, director of the Department of Animal and Plant Protection of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, awarded a license to the project scientific research undertaking unit, which marked the official launch of the project.
In the subsequent expert seminar, Chen Fei, director of the Asian Elephant Research Center of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, systematically introduced the project of "Yunnan Asian Elephant Genome Big Data Platform and Science Popularization" jointly carried out by the Asian Elephant Research Center of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, the National Germplasm Gene Conservation Center for Endangered Wild Animals and Plants, the Sacred Elephant Group Co., Ltd. and Nanjing Duohe Interactive Entertainment Technology Co., Ltd. According to the introduction, the project includes high-throughput whole genome resequencing of blood samples of Asian elephants in Yunnan, monitoring of wild breeding of Asian elephants, monitoring of foraging behavior, etc. The research results will be targeted to observe and rescue Chinese Asian elephants, daily help, form systematic guidance for their field environment restoration work, and carry out scientific protection, research and dissemination. Professor Fang Shengguo of the National Germplasm Gene Conservation Center for Endangered Wild Animals and Plants learned that genetic research on endangered wild animals is currently a very urgent topic, and the reason why he chose to carry out this project with the sacred elephant is based on the profound connotation and significance of the Asian elephant conservation initiative proposed by the sacred elephant before.
