What is the real 16 regiment in history?
The new 1st Regiment of the 386th Brigade of the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army was established in July 1938. At that time, the rapidly developing 129th Division had already created the Taihang, Taiyue and Ji'nan base areas, and in order to create the Ji'nan base area in the plains, the 129th Division also laid down the blood cost, and there were three groups of troops under the Taihang:
The first wave was the advance team of the 129th Division led by Sun Jixian and Xu Guangyi, the second wave was the 1st Regiment and Jinpu Detachment of the Eastward Column led by Chen Zaidao and Song Renqian, and the third wave was the 4 main regiments of the 129th Division's Eastward Column personally led by Xu Xiangqian, deputy commander of the 129th Division.
In August 1938, the 1st Regiment, 2nd Detachment and Dongjin Detachment of the Eastern Column were merged into the New 1st Regiment of the 386th Brigade, with regimental commander Cheng Qiguang (the brother of Cheng Xunxuan, Xu Shuai's wife at the time of the Red Army), and political commissar Xia Zusheng. Cheng Qiguang later served as the commander of the 3rd Division, went to the northeast during liberation, and died in 1993 at the age of 91.
Xia Zusheng later served as the deputy commander of the 6th Division, and died in May 1943 in Guozhuang Village, Zaoqiang County, at the age of 36.

Ding Silin, a native of Huang'an, Hubei Province, served as a battalion commander of the 93rd Division of the Red 31st Army during the Agrarian Revolution. During the Long March, he served as the chief of staff of the 274th Regiment and the commander of the 271st Regiment. After the outbreak of the All-out War of Resistance, he served as the commander of the 1st Battalion of the 772nd Regiment of the 386th Brigade of the 129th Division. Cheng Yuechang, the political commissar of the new 1st Regiment, is also a native of Huang'an, Hubei Province, and served as the chief of the organization section of the Red 93rd Division and the political commissar of the Supply Department, and served as an instructor of the 1st Battalion of the 772nd Regiment after the Red Army was reorganized into the Eighth Route Army.
In February 1939, the 386th Brigade of the 129th Division established an ambush in Xiangcheng, and the battle was commanded by deputy brigade commander Xu Shiyou.
In this "Model Plain Ambush Battle", the cavalry company lured the enemy deeper, and the 1st Battalion of the 688th Regiment of the 344th Brigade of Wei Jie blocked the frontal attack, and the main force attacked on the west flank of Zhangjiazhuang; Han Dongshan and Zhou Xihan's supplementary regiments attacked on the eastern flank of Zhuangtou Village; Ding Silin and Cheng Yuechangxin 1 regiment and 1 battalion were on guard against the Japanese army in Xixiaogu, and the main force cut off the Japanese retreat at Marlow Fort. The 3rd Regiment of the Eastern Column and the 3rd Brigade of the Advance Detachment cooperated.
In this battle, more than 250 enemy personnel were annihilated and 8 prisoners were taken. The three armed forces of the New 1st Regiment performed well with their lives and were personally awarded the honorary title of "Model Youth League" by Mr. Zhu. The great names of the regimental commander Ding Silin and the political commissar Cheng Yuechang were also quickly spread throughout the Taihang Mountains and the Taiyue Mountains because of the Xiangchenggu ambush.
On July 8, 1939, the new 1st Regiment fought fiercely with the 107th Wing of the Japanese 109th Division regiment sweeping in the Yunzu Town of the Anti-Japanese Base Area in southeastern Jin, and the regimental commander Ding Silin led a small number of fighters to retreat behind the palace to cover the main force of the regiment, unfortunately was hit by the sniper of the same day and died heroically, only 26 years old.
In May 1940, the new 1st Regiment of the 386th Brigade of the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army was renamed the 16th Regiment.
The first regimental commander of the 16th Regiment was Xie Jiaqing, the political commissar of the 129th Division's Advance Detachment and the 4th Sub-district of Jinji-Hebei-Yu, and Cheng Yuechang still served as the political commissar. Xie Jiaqing was a native of Luoshan, Henan, and served as the regimental commander of the Eyu-Anhui base area during the Red Army. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he served as the leader of the Cixian Working Group and the leader of the guerrilla group.
The 16th Regiment had just been reorganized for less than 3 months, catching up with the Hundred Regiments Battle that "shocked the enemy's rear".
According to the orders of the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army, 8 regiments of the 129th Division and a battalion of the headquarters artillery regiment were responsible for breaking the Yangquan to Yuci section of the Zhengtai Railway. The task given to the 16th Regiment by Chen Geng, commander of the 386th Brigade, and Zhou Xihan, chief of staff, was to attack and take lujiazhuang station, which was a very key part of the Zhengtai Railway.
After the mission of the spirit beast of the brigade headquarters, Xie Jiaqing immediately convened a meeting of cadres to analyze the enemy's situation and study the way of playing.
Lujiazhuang station has a small river, a large iron bridge and four barbed wire oil depots and military stations are tightly surrounded, and the enemy is more than 100 people of the Harada Brigade's Yoshioka Squadron, equipped with curved guns, heavy machine guns, and grenadiers. Xie Jiaqing decided: 1 company of the three battalions to contain Jijiayuan, 1 company to contain Yuci and Changning, 2 companies to break the road, 1 and 2 battalions to fight the main force of 2 consecutive attacks on the fortress group, and 2 consecutive nights to attack Lujiazhuang station.
On the evening of August 20, 1940, Xie Jiaqing and the 16th Regiment fired the first shot of the Hundred Regiments War.

Subsequently, Xie Jiaqing and the 16th Regiment made great contributions to the Battle of Yangerling.
On August 30, in order to crush the encirclement of the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army and the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army in Cangyugou by more than 1,700 Japanese troops, Xie Jiaqing, Cheng Yuechang, and deputy regimental commander Chen Jinyu led the 16th Regiment to block the Japanese army at Gaoping for 2 days, and then together with the 38th Regiment that returned to help, they blocked the Japanese attack.
On September 1, Xie Jiaqing's 16th Regiment and Cai Aiqing's 38th Regiment blocked the attack for one day at Dongshan, Baiyun Village, north of Mafang, and then received orders from Zhou Xihan that the 16th Regiment and the 38th Regiment should also resist the Japanese attack at Yangerling, covering the headquarters, 129th Division organs, hospitals and the masses to safely jump out of the Japanese encirclement.
Yangerling was located in Heshun County, Shanxi Province, Xie Jiaqing's 16th Regiment blocked the enemy in the north at the height of 1542.5, Cai Aiqing's 38th Regiment and 1 battalion monitored the enemy in the southern ravine at Red Cliff, and the main force occupied Dadongzu in Xiyang County, east of The Rolling Valley, to cover the retreat of the 16th Regiment.
In the face of more than a thousand aggressive Japanese troops, two regimental commanders Xie Jiaqing and Cai Aiqing went into battle shirtless, and the two political commissars, Cheng Yuechang and Liu Youguang, were also on the front line of the battle, and the commanders and fighters of the Eighth Route Army and the white blades of the Japanese army were strangled to death and repeatedly sawed.
The Yangerling blockade lasted from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and the 16th and 38th Regiments fought for 15 hours, waiting until the retreat orders from Liu Bocheng, commander of the 129th Division, before they left under the leadership of Zhou Xihan, leaving behind more than 300 Japanese corpses.
The commander of the Xie Jiaqing regiment left a deep impression on Liu Bocheng and Chen Geng, and unfortunately, this tiger who had experienced hundreds of battles led the commanders and fighters of the 16th Regiment to charge forward in the third stage of the Hundred Regiments War, and unfortunately was shot and died heroically, at the age of 28.
Founding Major General Cheng Yuechang
When the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression entered 1943, the Japanese army behind enemy lines was already thinning down.
However, the recalcitrant army launched a new round of anti-communist upsurge at an inopportune time, directly threatening the security of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region.
The headquarters of the Eighth Route Army decided to transfer the 358th Brigade and the 1st Independent Brigade of the 120th Division to the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region, and at the same time ordered Wang Jinshan, commander of the 386th Brigade of the Jinji-Hebei Luyu Taiyue Military Region, to lead the 16th Regiment to Yan'an. At this time, the leader of the 16th Regiment was Chen Jinyu, a native of Guangji, Hubei Province, and also the commander of the ambush in Hanluo Village.
After arriving in Yan'an, Chen Jinyu entered the Party School to study, and during the liberation period, he served as the political commissar of the 24th Brigade of the Northeast People's Autonomous Army, the commander of the 8th Brigade of the 3rd Division of the New Fourth Army, the commander of the 3rd Division of the Liaodong Military Region, the commander of the 165th Division of the Northeast Military Region, and the commander of the 4th Division of the 2nd Column. In 1955, he was awarded the title of Major General.
Deputy Regiment Commander Yuan Xuekai, a native of Huangpi, Hubei Province, later served as acting regimental commander of the 16th Regiment, deputy brigade commander of the Nishino New 4th Brigade, and political commissar of the 17th Division of the 6th Army of Yiye. In March 1950, the 20th Regiment of the 7th Cavalry Division of Changji and the 21st Regiment of Fukang rebelled, and Yuan Xuekai and the division commander Cheng Yuechang performed prominently in counterinsurgency. In 1955, he was awarded the title of Major General.
Political commissar Cheng Yuechang was even more legendary, and after arriving in Yan'an, he became the commander of the 16th Regiment of the New 4th Brigade, and later the brigade commander. During the liberation period, the new 4th Brigade was renamed the 17th Division, with division commander Cheng Yuechang, political commissar Huang Zhentang, deputy division commander Yuan Xuekai, 16 regiment renamed 6 army 17th division 50th regiment, and 49th regiment from the 771st regiment.

The 17th Division was one of the main forces in the northwestern battlefield, and during the Battle of Xifu, it took the initiative to fight at Lizhuang in Longdongnan for 1 day, avoiding greater losses in Xiye. When defending Yan'an, the 17th Division also contributed a lot, the 50th Regiment was able to attack and defend and made many military achievements, and the liberation of the Great Northwest was often attacked by the old commander Cheng Yuechang.
After marching into Xinjiang, the 17th Division was changed to the 6th Agricultural Division, and the 50th Regiment took root in Ili under the leadership of regimental commander Liu Guanghan.
