On Donovan, Davis played a breast cancer survivor. In an interview, she revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, which caused her to stop working and undergo mastectomy for it. The character was Davis' first after treatment, and when told the role would require nudity, Davis teamed up with producer David Holland to weave her reconstruction of her right breast into the story, refusing to use a prosthesis to replace her right nipple that she was supposed to recover from surgery.

"If an actress pretends her nipples are missing and says, 'Look, I'm still sexy and pretty,' some people probably won't believe it. But if it's true, I hope it makes people feel beautiful. I still feel beautiful," Davis said of the message he wanted to convey by playing the role.
