Among the thousands of troops and horses of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, there is a little-known special team wearing military uniforms and not in the barracks, and they are "military representatives.". "Military deputies" are plenipotentiaries of the armed forces at the local level. Mainly responsible for representing the military, monitoring and coordinating product quality, production technology, confidentiality work, product delivery and other work in the military factories in the garrison...

Walk from the ravine into the city

It was an afternoon in July 1979, and it was near dinner, but the sun was still high in the west. When I returned to the Ulanqab Daily newspaper to deliver the manuscript, my forehead was soaked with sweat because of my haste, so I couldn't help but take off my military hat and stir up on my face as I walked. At this moment, I saw several leaders of the regiment's political department in the distance, accompanying two soldiers who were nearly forty years old, with a white face and slightly fat, pointing at me. At this time, in the loudspeaker in front of the canteen, the announcer of the "Inner Mongolia People's Radio" was reciting a press release I had written reflecting the life of the troops in combat readiness. I thought they were talking about what I was writing, and at the same time I felt that those two cadres, unlike each of us in Inner Mongolia whose faces were red and black, must be the chiefs from somewhere else. So he quickly put on his hat and walked towards the canteen at a standard pace.

When I walked to the playground of the canteen, Kou Weiguo, the head of my propaganda unit, stopped me and told me to go to the cadre unit after eating quickly. So I went to the canteen to eat a few mouthfuls of food, and then rushed to the cadre unit.

After seeing me, Gao Bai, the head of the cadre unit, took out a test paper and said to me: "Come, sit at the desk and test you." "At that time, I was really a monk of the second in command, I couldn't feel my head, and it was inconvenient to ask more questions, so I picked up a pen and did the test questions. Remember the entire exam paper, including mathematics, physics, chemistry and language subjects. The exam questions were not too difficult for me, a high school student at the time. I read the questions once and answered the questions in turn. Who knew that the test paper had just been answered less than a third, and two chiefs who had stood on the playground before that I did not know came to the house, and one of the chiefs picked up my paper and looked at it, handed me a piece of paper, asked me to write something casually, and then said: "Okay, you don't have to answer the question." I thought I was answering the question incorrectly or why I was stopped, and I was feeling overwhelmed, and another chief said to the chief of the bureaucracy that we wanted to talk to him. The chief of the official unit agreed and went out the door.

I still vividly remember the conversation. A chief said to me that the self-defense counterattack operation against Vietnam is still not completely over, and the war on Zhenbao Island is tight, so organizationally considering transferring you to the northeast Zhenbao Island area to carry out combat tasks. As a soldier, I did not think too much about such a question, so I immediately answered: Soldiers take obedience to orders as their natural duty, and if the motherland needs it, I resolutely obey orders and rush to the front. It seemed that the head of the conversation was satisfied with my answer, and then they turned sharply and talked to me about my current work and family situation, and then let me return to the publicity unit.

Later, when I arrived at my new post, I learned that the two cadres I had talked to were Chen Maolin of the Military Representative Office of the Logistics Department of the Beijing Military Region and Zhang Jinling, military representative of the 247 Factory. And that answer was a routine written exam that had been held at the division headquarters in the morning, and I was asked to write something on the paper to see how my handwriting was, and the conversation was an interview.

After this incident, the days passed calmly for a few days, and I didn't think too much about it. One day, the head of the official unit informed me to go to the regimental health team for a physical examination. Only then did I realize that I might be transferred out of the old unit and go to work in the unit under the Military Representative Office of the Beijing Military Region.

It turned out that on the morning of my exam, the division had already organized a formal selection exam. After the leaders of the Military Representative Office of the Military Region learned about my cadre seedlings from the Division Cadre Section, they waited for me to return and made an examination for me personally. On that occasion, the Military Representative Office selected two comrades, Me and Bie Zuqiang, who was once a Comrade-in-Arms of Sichuan from my old company's Gaoji Company, and I remember that he wrote a beautiful pen and writing.

The propaganda unit where the author lived and worked, from where the author ran to his new combat post

In late July 1979, I received an order to formally enter the ranks of the military representatives of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. What makes me unforgettable is that on that day, the Political Department of the Regiment held a special dinner in the activity room of the Political Office to bid farewell to me and to welcome an officer to his new post. When Liu Zhenlin, deputy political commissar of the regiment, who was holding a meeting at the division headquarters, heard about it, he rushed over the mountains and mountains to the political office to see me off, regardless of the darkness and the distance, which made me deeply feel the chief's concern and love for the soldiers. It was this old commander who, when I was transferred from the company to the reporting team, appeared in front of me as soon as I put down my backpack and gave me encouragement. The past is vividly remembered and engraved in the heart. Not long after that, I reluctantly left the chiefs and comrades of the field troops who had fought together for five years.

Carrying a satchel on my right shoulder and left, a backpack on both shoulders, and an armed belt around my waist, I took the train from Jining to Datong in a standard military posture and took the letter of introduction to report to the cadres of the 69th Army of the Army in Datong City.

I remember that at noon I was resting on a large room in the military guest house. In the afternoon, an officer of the Military Cadres Department asked me to accompany me to the Datong Yanbei Military Sub-district to write off the strength of the selected personnel, and it was already sunset after the completion of the work.

The next morning, the leaders of the Military Cadres Department received more than a dozen comrades of our 69th Army who were transferred to the military region and encouraged us to work hard at our new posts and win glory for the 69th Army.

Then we boarded the train and rushed to the military representative office of the Taiyuan People's Liberation Army Stationed at Factory 247. Lei Junhuo, deputy general military representative of the artillery of the military representative office, and the deputy general military representative of the air force and armored troops stationed in our representative room greeted us at the station, and we took a large car from the factory from the railway station to the staff dormitory located opposite the gate of the 247 factory and next to the staff canteen. I remember sitting next to me was the deputy military representative of the Air Force stationed at the factory. Since then, we have embarked on a new military career working in the military representative office of the factory.

When the author was stationed in Taiyuan, there were more than 10,000 cadres and workers at the gate of the state-owned 247 factory

Liang Tonggang ‖ days in the military representative office

An old factory with a history of 100 years

Glorious "10.25"

The predecessor of the state-owned 247 factory was the Shanxi Machine Tool Factory, which was previously the Taiyuan Arsenal during the Yan Xishan period. After the liberation of Taiyuan, on April 24, 1949, it was renamed "North China Ordnance Industry Bureau Repair Factory", and on May 8, 1951, the North China Ordnance Industry Bureau Repair Factory was renamed "State-owned 247 Factory". In April 1957, the factory had its own second plant name "Shanxi Machine Tool Factory". The plant has made significant contributions to the modernization of national defense and the construction of the national economy, and is well-known, covering an area of 78 hectares and employing as many as 10,000 people.

In the history of factory 247, "10.25" was a familiar day, which later became a festival of the factory. On that day, the factory will carry out various cultural and sports activities, as well as meals to celebrate the festival. Because on this day in 1954, Chairman Mao Zedong personally signed a letter of encouragement to all the staff and workers of the factory, congratulating the factory on the success of the first batch of 76 field guns!

When we walked into the factory gate, a conspicuous shadow wall stood in front of us, and Chairman Mao's teaching of "I hope you will continue to work hard" was inscribed on it. We are often proud to live, work and fight in a factory where the great leader Chairman Mao has been encouraged.

The letter signed by Chairman Mao himself is preserved in the factory history museum, and the full text of the letter is as follows: "All the staff and workers of the Second Ministry of Machinery Industry transferred to the state-owned 247 Factory: the report on August 12 was read. Congratulations on the success of the first batch of seven-six-centimeter field guns. This is a good start for the establishment of the mainland's national defense industry and the enhancement of national defense forces. I hope that you will continue your efforts, under the guidance of Soviet experts, to further master technology and improve quality, and to ensure the completion of formal production tasks. Mao Zedong October 25, 1954"

At that time, a total of 130 of our military personnel who were selected and transferred from the units under the Beijing Military Region to join the ranks of military deputies through examinations, political examinations, physical examinations, and inspections (the number of people who entered through various means in the later period is unknown, about 50 people) and 19 people were assigned to the 247 factory. Soon after arriving at the military representative office, we celebrated the August 1st Founding Day in 1979. After August 1st, under the leadership of Du Baoquan, a representative of the artillery corps, and Li Fule, a representative of the armored corps, as the head and vice captains, 19 of us began a six-month study life of a science and engineering course at the "7.21" workers' university in the classroom of the "7.21" workers' university. The main courses are "Metal Materials Science", "Ballistics", "Tolerance Coordination and Technical Measurement", "Mechanical Drawing" and so on.

On the right side opposite the factory gate is the factory "721 Workers University", and further to the right is the factory staff hospital with inpatient wards (equivalent to the current grade II A), when the factory plant area and dormitories occupied a large area in the northern urban area of Taiyuan City.

After arduous study, the course of studying for two years at the university was overcome one by one by our young soldiers in half a year. When I was studying, I remembered that when comrades were listening carefully to the lectures in the classroom, I was often called out of the classroom to write materials for the military deputies' room, or to produce a blackboard newspaper, and a delay was half a day or a day. One day, I found Captain Du Baoquan with trepidation and said: "Captain, everyone is studying hard in the classroom, but I was drawn out to write things, so many courses I delayed, what should I do if the exam is not good in the end?" Captain Du smiled mysteriously and whispered in my ear, "You can rest assured, no problem, you think our factory can accommodate you and select you to come, that is, when the study is over, you will go to the Beijing Military Representative Office as a press officer." At this moment, I suddenly understood why the two military deputies who had received us had waited for me for a long time that afternoon in front of the playground of the old troops for me to take a separate exam for me. Despite this, I still did not give up trying to learn business knowledge, giving more energy than others. After half a year, he passed the exam and successfully completed the course. As for the subsequent changes in events caused by unhealthy trends and corruption in the military and the fate of their comrades-in-arms, this is an afterthought and will not be repeated here.

"Official Pass"

After the study, 19 of our comrades were assigned to various workshops of the whole factory, and then they each had a three-month internship with the master workers. I was assigned to the then confidential workshop, Workshop 11, also known as the Final Assembly Workshop. I learned fitter techniques from my master.

Some of the tooling, operation tables, etc. of that year are still in the workshop, and today it is still so kind to touch

On March 18, 1980, each of us received an official pass to the factory. This means that we can carry out the inspection and acceptance of military products. Until then, we had used temporary passes.

The military representative pass of our workshop also has a torch sign in the special column on the right side, which is stamped with the special seal of the factory security section. Without this sign, our workshop is not allowed to enter casually, including the representatives of the garrison troops. On December 4, 2020, I returned to the assembly workshop, and the factory comrades saw that my "Pass" of that year was very kind, and said that this certificate is now a cultural relic.

Take a picture in front of the entrance and exit of our assembly workshop personnel, and can't help but think about it. The young man in his 20s is now over the age of flower nails. The office of the military representative in the workshop was the place where we worked back then. Almost 40 years after leaving, I walked into the workshop and was able to find it accurately despite the door change. I know, there is an infusion of our feelings here!

A battlefield without smoke

Over the years, our factory has produced a variety of types of cannons, howitzers, smoothbore guns, rocket launchers, welcome salutes and so on. And every kind of artillery must finally be finally installed in our workshop. During my time in the final assembly workshop, the main inspection and acceptance of the artillery was the 85 mm cannon.

Since the founding of New China, Zhu De, Li Xiannian, Chen Yun, Ye Jianying, Peng Zhen, Peng Dehuai, He Long, and other party and state leaders, as well as many marshals of the Republic, have inspected the 247 factory.

All leading comrades who inspect the factory must come to our workshop for guidance. In 1980, after Comrade Li Da, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, inspected our workshop, representatives of the same army and factory leaders took a photo at the entrance of the workshop.

Today, several of our friends also took a group photo at the door of the workshop. At that time, this gate was not something that could be opened casually. In that red age, people's sense of secrecy was very strong, and according to old comrades at that time, many workers in our factory worked in a workshop for decades and did not know what products were produced in their factories. The gate of our workshop is only opened when the cannon is pulled in the middle of the night, and the cannon is transported to the warehouse, all of which are disguised after midnight before they can go to the street.

The military representatives stationed in the factory not only have the responsibility to inspect and accept military products on behalf of the military, but also have the responsibility and obligation to assist the factory in overcoming the difficulties in the quality of military products. Comrade Shi Fusheng, the leader of my group and the military representative of the general assembly workshop, assisted the factory in overcoming the technical difficulties of test firing products. This alone saves more than 300,000 yuan in test costs for the country, which is 300,000 yuan in the 80s of the last century. Therefore, Deputy Shi was awarded the third class merit.

In the factory history museum, I saw the eighty-five cannons that we inspected and accepted that year, and I couldn't help but take a photo. After the founding of New China, the Eighty-Five Cannon made outstanding achievements in defending the motherland against aggression and self-defense and counterattack operations. I can't remember how many times I signed the artillery certificate file.

The "old cannon" that has made great achievements in battle

Take a look at this introduction to the Eighty-Five Cannon, and I believe you will have a lot of respect for this cannon!

It is not modest to say here that I have made a small contribution to the quality assurance of the 85 cannon products. The story takes place in 1980, the monthly production of artillery is about to leave the factory, when I inspected and accepted, I found that there was a trachoma quality problem in the muzzle retractor, and then stopped the acceptance, did rework, and reported to Shi Fusheng, the leader of the workshop army representative group. Although the factory later came up with a variety of theoretical data, we made an explanation that the trachoma problem did not affect the performance of the tactical technology. However, we adhere to the principle of being responsible for the lives of soldiers and the victory of the war, and require the factory to rework the production of artillery in the whole quarter in accordance with the process standards and acceptance regulations. I remember that the workshop was full of unloaded gun port retractors until the welding and polishing acceptance was passed. My achievements were recorded in my file.

Our workshop still retains part of the ground we had in the factory, which was made of prismatic wooden blocks according to Soviet standards. This is because the towed artillery of that year had a stationary hoe, and the heavy stationary hoe was not suitable for being placed on the cement floor. Today, when I see the workshop floor of that year, I feel very kind.

I am very pleased that the artillery we produce today no longer needs to be stationed with hoes. So most of the floor of the workshop has been changed to a concrete floor.

Stones piled up under the gun carrier

You must have noticed the stones piled up under the gun carrier, and I think this is a conscious display by the comrades of the Factory History Museum. The artillery produced quarterly in that year, according to the requirements, we had to randomly select one for large-scale experiments, that is, destructive experiments, in order to test whether the quality of the factory artillery was qualified, and this artillery first went to the range located in Yangqu for live fire. Including the various tactics required by the process, various charges, and various speeds of shooting. Remember to shoot at full charge, and in the hot sun you can see the gun barrel smoking to burn the paint. After such a series of shooting experiments, it is also necessary to carry out traction tests on various roads, including asphalt roads, gravel roads, and roadless experiments. There are strict regulations on the mileage and speed of various roads. Back then, I was standing on a tractor, bouncing back and forth on the rocky beach at regular speed. The big rocky beach is much harder to walk than the stones piled up on the map.

In 1980, on behalf of the military, I conducted a large-scale artillery test with comrades armed with guns. After the live-fire fire, various road travel experiments were carried out along the Qingxu and Jiaocheng lines. When carrying out the roadless experiment, the factory comrades considered that the roadless experiment was too arduous and too bumpy, and sometimes the tractor would tiptoe up dozens of centimeters on the side, and even the danger of overturning, and advised me not to follow up with the car. The sense of mission of the soldiers prompted me to refuse the kindness and concern of the comrades of the factory, and the whole roadless experiment, standing on the Jiefang brand car, would sometimes be tiptoed up high, sometimes skewed from side to side, and the whole process came down, clutching the hands of the carriage, and even grinding out blood bubbles. That large experiment ended triumphantly with a qualified product, and I signed my name on the artillery large-scale test book, and I also underwent practical training.

I am still happy to be able to contribute my own meager strength to the quality of military products and let the soldiers use the best artillery to fight the enemy!

At the Factory History Museum, I met the inscription of Admiral Li Laizhu, the former commander of the Beijing Military Region and the veteran commander of the field army unit where I belonged, and I felt very cordial. It turned out that the field army team I was in after I enlisted in the army still had a fate with my later factory. It was 1968, and some comrades in my old team entered the "three arms and two armies" of the 247 factory, making indelible contributions to the factory and social stability at that time.

At that time, the 247 factory where we were stationed not only had a factory radio station, which broadcast on time every day, but also published the newspaper "Spark Newspaper". Radio stations and newspapers pay for their publications. I remember that after my manuscript was published, the young and beautiful factory announcer would send the remuneration to my workshop representative's room, while other people's remuneration needed to be signed by individuals to the Propaganda Department of the Party Committee. At that time, the old doorman always seemed serious, as if he could see through something, and managed not to let her in. The girl had to let the doorman call me to the door, and when I hurriedly signed and received the payment, I didn't even have the opportunity to say a few more words...

After several inquiries, we finally found the Xiangtang Guest House where we once lived, which was specially built for Soviet experts in the 1950s. Now the doors, windows and walls can no longer see the Soviet-style appearance of the past. The guest house has been occupied by a local secondary school. A building of historical significance can still be restored to its original condition. Here I can't help but think that my father, sister, and my comrades-in-arms of the old unit, Li Shizhen and Zhou Runsheng, and the vice president of the "Comrades-in-Arms Newspaper" of the Beijing Military Region, have all visited me here or at the factory.
