"When you receive a message from me, it means that I am still alive"

author:The Paper

Hu Weiguo (The Paper's reporter Chen Sisi)

He is a surgeon who has been practicing medicine for 30 years, carefully recording the stories of his career;

He is the leader of the sixth batch of medical teams in Shanghai, leading more than 100 nurses to race against death on the front line of the fight against the epidemic.

He is the "Hu Daddy" in the mouth of many medical students, caring for the younger generation with a warm heart;

He is also a "good doctor" in the eyes of thousands of patients, illuminating their life path with humanistic care.

His name is Hu Weiguo, and he is the vice president of Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine.

From now on, The Paper will continue to publish Hu Weiguo's "anecdotes on practicing medicine". Through words, you may be able to better understand the doctor-patient relationship and read the true side of clinicians.

The second story is about the "promised gift".

Seeing a doctor, also known as seeking medical treatment, means that the patient pleads with the doctor to diagnose and treat him. Because one party has to "ask" because of illness, the other party needs to use the ability to "respond", and there will be a response when there is a request, so the doctor-patient relationship is actually difficult to be completely equal, and the phenomenon of patients "giving gifts" to the doctor appears.

Most patients, out of recognition, trust, respect and gratitude for the doctor's life-saving, will use gifts to express their hearts; There are also some patients who are worried about their diseases and want to receive better treatment and care by giving gifts. Regardless of the patient's motivation, should the doctor accept the gift?

The current practice guidelines clearly stipulate that no gifts should be received from patients and their families. However, in the specific humanistic context, it is not so easy and absolute to deal with, and the operation is not as simple as black and white. Because doctors do not treat diseases, but all kinds of patients with thoughts, character, emotions, and obsessions.

"When you receive a message from me, it means that I am still alive"

Hu Weiguo is operating on a patient.

Treating diseases can also be said to be a spiritual interaction and emotional exchange between doctors and patients, not just cold scalpels and bitter pills, not looking at time, regardless of the occasion of a one-size-fits-all approach, will only indifferently cut off the mutual trust and sincere feelings established between doctors and patients. There are rules and morals in receiving or not receiving, but there are more humanities, there is art, and there is learning.

For more than thirty years of practicing medicine, I have had three unforgettable experiences in treating patients as gifts, and as the "medical age" has grown, I have a deeper reflection and understanding of these three experiences. Any norms, ethics, rules, and regulations are difficult to be the only standard answer in the face of human nature.

Last time, I recounted an experience of "refusing etiquette" when I first practiced medicine. This time, I'm going to tell the story of another female patient, Swallow (pseudonym), which I call "Yori."

Swallow is a TV presenter from another province and city. Although she is nearly middle-aged, when I first saw her, I still felt that she had a youthful vitality, long black hair flowing on her shoulders, always smiling between words and demeanor, and her words were bright and sweet, especially pleasant.

Unfortunately, Swallow had stomach cancer. When she came to see me in the clinic, I admitted her to the hospital and operated on her in time. Through laparoscopic minimally invasive gastric cancer surgery, I completely removed her stomach cancer lesions and did a full lymphatic dissection for her, which lasted several hours, and the progress was very smooth, her body recovered quickly after the operation, the whole treatment process was carried out according to the predetermined plan, and I also proudly regarded this gastric cancer surgery as a successful "work".

Regrettably, the pathological test results of swallows show that the biological characteristics of malignant tumors are very poor, and the prognosis is not optimistic.

Before I was discharged from the hospital, I repeatedly cared for her: "After I go back, I must go to the local hospital for chemotherapy according to the plan we discussed, even if the chemotherapy loses hair, I must insist on it." Because this operation is my 'work', you live, my 'work' is perfect! ”

Swallow said to me, "Okay, Dr. Hu, I'll do what you say." Then, she said to me meaningfully: "Dr. Hu, our hometown is rich in Wendan, which is very delicious." December is the ripe season of Bentan, and at this time of year, I will send you a bundan, please be sure to accept it. Because when you receive a wendan from me, it means that I am still alive, and your 'work' is still very good. If you don't receive my Wendan, then..."

"When you receive a message from me, it means that I am still alive"

Wen Dan, a hometown specialty sent by swallows.

For swallow's agreement, I really can't find a reason to refuse. So, every December, I would receive a wendan from her as promised. Wendan, produced in Swallow's hometown, has large seeds and small seeds, crisp and tender flesh, sweet taste, and is very refreshing to eat in the mouth.

One year, two years, three years, four years, five years, the Wendan of the Swallows has arrived every year, which makes me very happy, what could be more exciting than this?!

Fast forward to speed, and the December of the sixth year had arrived, and just as I was immersed in the pleasure of receiving Wendan from Swallow again, I unexpectedly received a letter from her eldest sister that read:

Dr. Hu:

Hello! Remember swallows? You performed stomach cancer resection for her.

I am swallow's eldest sister. In fact, she has been away from us for more than two years. Before she died, she repeatedly told me that every December, I must not forget to send Wendan to Dr. Hu on her behalf, and Dr. Hu said that because this operation was his work, Dr. Hu could not receive Wendan, and he would be sad and disappointed, because his "works" also went with me.

Sister Swallow has made me have the opportunity to get to know you, which is my luck. Thank you again for all that you did to save my sister's life!

As I read, my hands were trembling, my heart was sinking, and my eyes were beginning to moisten. Swallow, what a kind patient you are! When you are about to leave this world, you still have others in mind. You are constantly encouraging your doctor with your well-intentioned "deception", making me believe that my operation did not fail and that my "work" still has a good record!

I quickly replied to her eldest sister: "Sister Swallow: Hearing this bad news makes me sad and sad. I am deeply saddened by the passing of Swallow, and even more touched by her kindness. The surgery I performed for her was not perfect, but her painstaking efforts were unforgettable to me. She will always live in the heart of me, a surgeon! ”

Nowadays, every year on the Qingming And winter solstice, the day of commemorating the deceased, I can't help but think of Swallow, remember the agreement she made with me when she was discharged from the hospital, think of the Wendan she sent every year, and remember the solemn instructions she made to my eldest sister for me before she died... At this time, I will always silently light a heart incense for her in my heart.
