Monaco's postal history dates back to the principality's first postmark in 1704. It is well known that the cover without stamps has the manuscript postmark and handmark postmark of Monaco and (French occupation 1793-1814); Since the principality was once larger, it may also include postmarks from the communes of Menton and Roquebrune before their separation in 1848. Monaco used Sardinian stamps from 1851 to 1860, when Sardinia ceded the surrounding counties of Nice to France under the Treaty of Turin and relinquished its protection against Monaco; French stamps with the Postmark of Monaco or Monte Carlo are used thereafter.
The first Monaco stamp was issued on 1 July 1885 and bears the image of Prince Charles III of Monaco.
In 1937, the Principality established a stamp issuing office in response to the growing interest of philatelic enthusiasts. In 1949, Prince Rainier III ascended the throne, making the issue of philately in the principality even more important. During his reign, the prince personally participated in all aspects of the design and format of the Principality's philatelic issuance, quoting him as saying that stamps were "the best ambassadors of a country". [3] The Prince was a well-known philatelist whose collection was the basis of the Monaco Stamp and Coin Museum.
Monaco joined the Universal Postal Union in 1955 and the European Postal Union in 1993. Stamps linked to the French postal exchange rate in Monaco continue to be popular with collectors and are considered a source of income for the Principality.
