There is a group of good friends in the small town of Chichekapen who love to explore, like brainstorming, are full of curiosity and imagination, and they are a fivesome of little detectives: Hugo, Hortons, Adele, Paul and Camille.
One weekend afternoon, Camille found her father sleeping on the couch, his mouth wide open and snoring. She wondered why Dad made such a harsh noise. Camille summons his friends to discuss, and they begin to express their opinions, trying to uncover the secret of snoring.
This is one of a series of imaginative picture books by French children's picture book writer and illustrator André Bouchard: The Mystery of Snoring.
Still a typical picture book style of André Bouchard, the whole book uses black and white line drawing to show the dots and lines, light and dark light and shadow in the picture, reflecting the advancement of the storyline, changes in the environment, etc., but uses painting to highlight the image of the small protagonists or other subjects.
How does snoring come about?
Adele felt the snoring sound like her brother was playing the clarinet, and she thought Camille's dad should have swallowed the clarinet in his throat. Moreover, Adele felt that many musicians liked to play with their eyes closed, presumably while sleeping. What an interesting idea!
Hugo believes that there is something wrong with the agitator in Camille's father's stomach, or that the digestion pump nozzle is blocked and needs to be taken to the garage to be dismantled for inspection. This frightened Camille. So Paul suggested that the inhabitants of the villain nation could be found to help repair it.
Hortons suspected that a large cat living in Camille's father was purring, and that the cat had another cat in its throat. It reminds me of japan's "Kitten Fish" series of picture books, the interesting story of cat-fish symbiosis, which is similar to this.
Paul thinks it's a lump in the throat because adults eat animals raw.
But Camille said the noises were made by microbes in their bodies because they were using tractors and bucket conveyors to build houses, build roads, and grow vegetables on the field.
At this point, Adele came up with the surprising idea that Camille's father was actually an alien, sending a signal to his companions, and they were exploring whether it was worth settling on Earth. Camille objected to that claim because her dad was a good guy and had just given her a new soccer ball yesterday.
Hearing the new football, the hearts of the little detectives flew away and they couldn't wait to run to play football. That's the end of the story... Oh no, the author says that he was actually threatened by the "Purr Experts" not to reveal their secrets.
