How many people are in your area? Details of the 2022 Census of Ireland's counties are revealed

Preliminary results for the 2022 census released on Thursday show that Ireland's population has reached 5.1 million, the highest level since before the Great Famine.

The survey results also provide growth in each county, showing how the country is developing.

Places like Longford and Meath saw the biggest increases, but what are the details of where Irish people live in 2022?

Carlow

As of the 2022 census, Carlow had a population of 61,931. In 2016, the number was 56,932. That's an 8.8% increase (4,999 people) over last year.

Cavan

Cavan's population grew by 6.6 percent, jumping from 76,176 in 2016 to 81,201 in 2022.

Clare

In 2016, 118,817 people lived in Clare County, and by 2022, that number would have increased to 127,419, an increase of 7.2%.

Cork

The 2022 Census records show that the number of residents in Cork County increased by 7.1% from 542,868 in 2016 to 581,231 in 2022.

Donegal

In the 2016 census, Donegal's population declined, with a recorded population of 159,192. The population grew by only 4.5% in 2022 to 166,321 people.

Dublin

Dublin's population grew by 7.7 per cent, from 1347359 in 2016 to 1450701 in 2022. In this year's census, Fingal in the northern part of the county was one of the fastest growing areas in terms of population growth.

Galway

In the 2022 census, Galway's population was 276,451, an increase of 7.1% (18,393 million) over the 2016 census (258,058).

Kerry

Kerry's population grew by 5.1 percent from 147,707 in 2016 to 155,258 in 2022.

Kildare

Kildare was one of the largest growing counties, with an 11% increase in population, or 24,473 people. In 2016, the population recorded at the census was 222,504. In 2022, the population was 246,977.

Kilkenny

Like Donegal, Kilkenny's population grew by only 4.5 percent, or 4,453 people, and the population increased from 99,232 in 2016 to 103,685 in 2022. Leinster has two counties with growth that haven't risen above the national average, and this is one of them.

Laois

The population of Laois grew by 8.2%, with a recorded population of 84z,697 in 2016 and 91,657 in 2022.

Leitrim

In the 2022 census, Leitrim County saw a higher percentage growth than the national average of 9.5 percent. In 2016, the county had 32,044 residents, while this year 35,087 people lived there, an increase of 3,043.

Limerick

Limerickshire's population increased by only 5.4 per cent, with 194,899 recorded at the 2016 census and 205,444 recorded in 2022.

Longford

In the 2022 census, Longford grew the fastest, with a population growth of 14.1%. 40,873 people lived there in 2016, while 46,634 were recorded on census night.

Louth

In 2016, Louth County had a population of 128,884, compared to 139,100 in 2022. This is an increase of 7.9%.

May

Although the population of Mayo County declined to 130,507 in the 2016 census, in the 2022 census, the population of Mayo County increased by 5.3%, or 6,724 people. The county's population is recorded at 137,231 people.

Meath

In the 2022 census, Meath is one of the fastest growing counties in terms of population. The county's population was 25,252, an increase of 12.9%. The population in 2016 was 195,044. By 2022, that number is 220,296.

Monaghan

Monaghan County was one of those counties with a lower growth rate than the national average, with an increase of just 5.6%. The 2022 census recorded 64,832 people, while the 2016 census recorded 61,386 people.

Offaly

Offaly is one of two counties in Leinster that has not seen population growth exceed the national average. The county's population grew by 6 percent, from 77,961 in 2016 to 82,668.

Roscommon

The percentage growth for this county is higher than the national average at 8.4 percent. Roscommon had a population of 64,544 in 2016 and 69,995 in 2022.

Sligo

Sligo County was one of the counties that saw population decline in the 2016 census. However, the 2022 census recorded 69,819 people, an increase of 6.5 percent, up from 65,535 in 2016.

Tipperary

The 2022 census record shows tipperary's population increased by only 5.1 percent to 167,661, up from 159,553 in 2016.

Waterford

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, Waterford County's growth rate is 9.4 percent, higher than the overall growth rate in the country. The population recorded 116,176 in 2016, compared to 127,085 in 2022.

Westmeath

Westmeath's population grew by 8.0 percent, with 88,770 recorded in 2016 and 95,840 recorded in 2022.

Wexford

Wexford County's population grew from 149,722 in 2016 to 163,527 in 2022. This is an increase of 9.2%.

Wicklow

Wicklow's population increased by another 9.2 percent. In 2016, the census recorded 142,425 people, compared with 155,485 in 2022.

These results are preliminary, as the census was completed and collected more than two months ago. More details are expected to be released between April and December 2023 and will include publications on topics such as housing and commuting.
