Originating in the Bamingi-Bangoran province of the Central African Republic, it slopes northwestward through southwestern Chad and flows into Lake Chad, the largest lake in the Sahara Desert, located on the border of Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon. The Shali River has a total length of 1450 km, a total basin area of 700,000 km2, a complex water system, a longitudinal river network, and many tributaries, with an average annual runoff of 38.8 billion square meters.

This area, located along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, presents an ecological environment conducive to human habitation because of this river. Archaeology confirms that a large number of people settled here in 7000 BC, and this area has long been the center of the activities of various civilizations, and people who live by water cultivate, graze, fish and hunt on both sides of the Shali River, and breed and breed their own civilization.

The Shari River is also the river of chadian life. In Chad, at least eighty percent of the population depends on subsistence agriculture and livestock rearing for subsistence. It is precisely because of the abundant water source of the Shali River that people graze herds of cattle and sheep, harvest cotton, peanuts, rice and potatoes, although the yield is limited, but enough to keep the people of this land alive and hopeful.
