By far one of the best things to do in Canakkale is to visit Troy, which is 31 km southwest of the town and is on the edge of the village of Tevfikiye.

The discovery of the ancient Troy (believed to be the site of the Trojan War in homer's epics) is largely due to amateur German archaeologist and treasure hunter Heinrich Schliemann, who began excavations here in 1871.

Later, archaeologists working here not only excavated the famous city of King Priam, who fought a 10-year war with the Greeks (as described in Homer's Iliad), but also excavated several layers of different settlements that flourished here over a period of 2500 years (from 3000 BC to 500 AD).

Due to the nature of the complex excavation work, the site may be difficult to understand, lacking standing monuments (mostly foundations seen). For most visitors, though, the wonder of this tourist attraction is to step into history from the myth of Achilles, Hector, Paris and the Trojan Horse.

A visit to the Troy Museum is highly recommended before visiting the archaeological site, as the museum has done a very good job in helping to explain the ruins.

This is a great opportunity for you to learn about the vast history of Troy, plus explore the site's famous place in myths and legends.

In the exhibition, you will find marble statues, coins, ceramics and altars that will take you through the different eras of the settlement of Troy. The main highlight is the museum's collection of gold jewelry unearthed in the ruins.

Climbing to the top of the city walls here is very interesting, and there is a great view of the return to Canakkale across the Dardanelle.

Ferries from Canakkale Pier to here can depart all day if full. If you are already in The Gallipoli Peninsula, there are regular minibuses between Eceabat (the main town of the Gallipoli Peninsula) and Kiritbahir.
