Early life
Denise Lee Richards was born in 1971 in Donners Grove, Illinois, to coffee shop owner Joni and telephone engineer Yves. Her mother died of cancer in November 2007. She has German and French ancestry and a younger sister. As a child, she was the only girl on the baseball team.
When Richards was 15, her family moved to California. In 1989, she graduated from El Camino High School. She was named the best looking in the high school graduation booklet. After graduating from high school, she began modeling and traveled to cities such as Paris, New York and Tokyo to shoot photos and advertisements.

Richards' best-known characters are Carmen Ibanes in Casta Galactics (1997), Kelly Van Ryan in Play To Kill (1998), and Bang Girl in 007's Black Sun Crisis (1999). She has also starred in the films The Death of a Beautiful Model (1999), Valentine's Day (2001), Undercover Brothers (2002), Scream 3 (2003), True Love Supreme (2003) and Witness Protection Program for The Black Mad Woman (2012).

She has starred in television dramas including the sitcom The Blue Mountain Team (2010–11), the mystery thriller Twist (2013–14) and the soap opera Bold and Beautiful (2019 – present). Richards starred in the reality show Denise Richards: It's Complicated (2008–09) and Housewives of Beverly Hills (2015–2019). In 2011, Richards published his memoir, The Real Girl Next Door, which became a New York Times bestseller.
Personal life
Richards was engaged to actor Charlie Sheen on December 26, 2001, and married on June 15, 2002, at the estate of Spin City creator Gary David Goldberg. They have two daughters. In March 2005, Richards, who was pregnant with his second daughter, filed for divorce from Sim. She applied for a restraining order against Sim, claiming she had received death threats. Divorced on November 30, 2006, Sim was required to maintain a distance of 300 feet from his ex-wife and their daughter unless visited under supervision. They previously shared custody of the two girls, and Richards sued Sim for "marital disorder, alcoholism and crime problems" to claim sole custody of the children. In May 2010, Sim gave custody of her daughter to Richards.
In June 2018, she joined the Will Rogers Film Pioneer Foundation's Summer Cinema PSA event, which provides vital neonatal equipment to U.S. hospitals. Richards filmed a public service announcement and played it in movie theaters across the country.
