In the 1950s, around 1955, after an application, Grandpa's family was assigned by the housing management office to live in an old house in an alley in the county town, with a construction area of 73.3 square meters. According to the letter of the second uncle in the 90s, "About 1952, I rented the current public property house at XX Street X Lane X with my parents and the housing management office through reasonable procedures, and lived for nearly forty years", and in another letter, it was written that "we have lived in this house since 1955", so I lived in it from 1952 to 1955.

alley

The alley was called Qushu Lane before 1966, connecting XX Street and XX Road, the alley is not long, there are 13 house numbers. Stone floor, on both sides are long barrel houses, no separate bathrooms. There is a public toilet in the alley, and whenever it rains heavily, the septic tank will overflow and flow down the alley into the river, which is very smelly. The alley is basically dominated by Cantonese people, grandparents only go to a family surnamed Li in the same alley on weekdays, li surnamed people are also Hunan people, the owner and grandfather are similar in age, are workers in the factory, so the two can chat.

At that time, grandpa himself went to the housing management office to apply for an assigned residence and lived with two other families. In the early days, grandpa's family lived in the attic, a family of five, grandpa, grandma, second aunt, second uncle, and father slept in two beds in a small and dark attic. The other two families downstairs live in extremely difficult living conditions.

Living room

The house was a tall and narrow long barrel house, which was the standard lingnan architectural model of that era, with two floors. The house is very deep, the roof is narrow, the early entrance is a very small living room, the original door and the main wall of the house are made of bamboo, and after the other two families moved away, Grandpa replaced the bamboo board with wooden boards, made doors and windows, and built a pool in the kitchen.

The house is very simple and dark, and the lighting is mainly by the window next to the gate, and the wooden bar fence above, which can be transparent and ventilated. Entrance to the living room. The living room is equipped with a 15-watt light bulb, dim light, there are two switches, one in the living room, one in the attic, after pulling the attic switch, the living room light is turned off, the attic light is turned on, it is very power-saving.

In the living room, near the kitchen, is a small room separated by wooden planks, which Grandma slept in when her legs and feet were inconvenient. The living room is walking inwards to the kitchen and patio.

Next to the patio is the kitchen, which originally belonged to a barber, was very tall, and there was a pool for washing hair on the kitchen stove. It's dark and damp all year round, and I feel horrible every time I go, and behind the kitchen is a culvert where the stream flows into the river, so the house will be cooler too.

attic

Enter the left side of the living room along the wooden staircase to go up to the attic room, built with wooden planks. The attic was a very dark room, very small in size, with a bed and some large wooden boxes for clothes, and in my memory the attic was dark and crunched as I walked on the planks. Further up the stairs is the roof.

roof

The staircase continues up to the roof, which is called the tile back roof in the vernacular, because it is made of tiles. In the past, when it was hot, fathers would go up to the roof of the building to cool off or even sleep. Of course, it is also necessary to repair the roof from time to time, especially when it rains heavily, and the rainwater will seep in from everywhere.

After entering the 60s, two other families moved out one after another, my second aunt and second uncle also found two single rooms in the alley, the house was lived by my grandparents and my father, and the second uncle and the second aunt ate at home when they were unmarried, just sleeping and going to the dormitory.

flood

There are also many disasters there, such as June 22, 1968, heavy rainfall, water level of 89.47 meters, the river flooded the street at 3 p.m. At 5 p.m. on the 25th, the peak of the flood reached 90.05 meters high, and the water depth of the street in front of the cinema reached 3.05 meters, which was rare in the past hundred years. This flood was the biggest flood that Dad had experienced when they were young, and Grandpa quickly moved the bed and miscellaneous things to the office on the second floor of the factory, and Dad and they found the bed board that had been washed out by the flood on the street, and lay on it as a wooden boat paddled to the side of Fuqian Road to play.

withdraw

After grandpa died, grandma generally lived in each room, the second uncle continued to rent the old house for the carpentry workshop to make furniture, the original rent was 5.66 yuan, after becoming a workshop, the monthly rent was 19.9 yuan, at that time I followed my father often past, at night everyone ate and drank in the house, the second uncle and father, sometimes there are friends or apprentices of the second uncle, they always drink until late, a dim light bulb in the living room. The house was reclaimed in May 1992 and demolished around 2000 during the renovation of the Old Town.
