It is only known that Shang Bolian (Figure 2) was the decipherer of the Rosetta Stone, but in fact, there was a key figure in the process of deciphering this stone tablet. He is the famous physicist Thomas Young (Picture 1), the one who engaged in light and wave theory.
In 1814, Thomas Young received a rubbing of the Rosetta Stone, and after some research,
1. He believes that there is an intrinsic connection between the script of the Holy Book on the Rosetta Tablet (Fig. 3) and the secular script (Fig. 4);
2. Identify 86 Greek and secular words that contrast with each other, most of which are correct;
3. Assert that the ancient Egyptian script of the Holy Book and the Monastic script (Figure 5) are essentially identical, but in different forms;
4. It is believed that there is a phonetic component in hieroglyphs, and on this basis, the pronunciation of several symbols in the holy script is determined;
5. Recognition of the names of the holy books of Ptolemy and Cleopatra;
However, because Thomas Young was amateurish in Egyptology, he did not really decipher ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. However, his above understanding provided some help for the successful decipherment of Chambollion.
The deciphering of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs is the result of countless scholars, not the credit of Chamborh alone. Champerian was able to succeed because he stood on the shoulders of giants.
