It is a perennial herb of the Asteraceae family and the genus Bittersweet. The roots are vertically straight and usually do not branch. The rhizomes are extremely short and constricted. The stems are erect, solitary or a few stems in clusters, 1–3 mm in diameter at the base, and the upper umbels are inflorescence-like branches.

It grows on hillside roadsides, in fields, in riverine scrub or crevices in rocks.
