Nicknamed "Sugar Monk", he loved beautiful women and ate meat, and he was ordained three times and three times, and the cause of death was lamentable

author:The woman who speaks history

(The Woman Who Told History – Issue 38)

Start by admiring a few small poems.

One:

Spring rain building head shakuhachi, when to return to see the Zhejiang tide?

The mangshoe was uncovered and stepped across the cherry blossom bridge.

Second:

The Sea Heavenly Dragon was bloody and yellow, and he was dressed in long hair and sang about the wilderness.

Yi Shui Xiao Xiao people also went, a day bright moon as white as frost.

Third:

Qi Kuo died and lived a question, and walked in the clouds and flowed water to a lone monk.

Laughing and crying for no reason, even if there is joy, it is like ice.

Aren't these little poems cattle? Anyway, when I first saw it, I was completely shocked, even if it was Li Bai, the level was just like that. In fact, the author of these poems is really cattle, this article to talk about his legendary life:

He is known as the first love monk of the Republic of China, and nicknamed "Sugar Monk", also known as a poet monk, a painting monk; he has been ordained three times in his life, loves beautiful women, also eats meat, can revolutionize, will run naked, once ate 60 meat buns, can poetry and good literature, proficient in 5 Chinese words, once shocked Lu Xun with the translation of Byron's poems, buried "Lover's Bridge" after death, the same name prostitute Su Xiaoxiao as a companion...

(1) The bizarre life of Chinese-Japanese mixed blood

Strangely enough, there are many geniuses in history who are illegitimate children. For example, Wei Qing and Huo Fuyi, the most courageous generals of the Chinese Han Dynasty, fought against the Xiongnu; there are more foreign ones, such as the Italian genius painter Leonardo da Vinci, the famous French writer Dumas Jr., and the founding father of the United States Hamilton. The protagonist of this article is also an illegitimate child.

At the end of the Qing Dynasty, there was a rich businessman named Su Jiesheng in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, who worked hard in Yokohama, Japan for many years, and was once a British-funded comprador of the Yokohama Bandung Tea House. Of course, he also married a Japanese wife, but he was the third aunt's wife, the famous Kawai Sen.

The day was September 28, 1884. Su Jiesheng lost his mind after drinking, and pulled the maid next to him to bed and did a reckless thing. Who knows, this maid became pregnant, and later gave birth to a baby boy, which is the protagonist of this article: Su Manshu. And this maid named Wakoko Kawai is the sister of Su Jiesheng's wife Kawai Sen.

Nicknamed "Sugar Monk", he loved beautiful women and ate meat, and he was ordained three times and three times, and the cause of death was lamentable

At the young age, Su Manshu and Yimu Hexian were united

Su Jiesheng did an ugly thing with his sister-in-law, and in that era of son preference, it made it difficult for Kawai Ruozi to see people. So she simply threw her son to her sister Kawai Xian and left: The good things your husband has done, you come and clean it up!

So Su Manshu followed his aunt Kawai Sen from a young age, and did not know until he grew up that Kawai Sen was not his mother.

At that time, Su Jiesheng's business in Japan encountered setbacks, leaving his wife and children to return to Guangdong, and the wife of the family was ready-made, so he continued to live with mrs. Huang and Chen of the second house. In China, Jay Sophie-sing continued to prosper, and the business became bigger and bigger, and eventually became a billionaire. However, the wives did not argue, the sons did not give birth to a few, and most of them died prematurely. This makes Su Jiesheng very unhappy, in the future he will go, who will inherit this hundred million family property?

On this day, Su Jiesheng suddenly remembered the glamorous incident that happened in the East. Hey hey, thanks to Lao Tzu's foresight! He thought of his illegitimate son, Sumanshu.

So Su Jiesheng took the erfang Hehexian and his son Su Manshu back to Guangdong. It is said that the illegitimate children are more intelligent, coupled with the mixed Blood of China and Japan, Su Manshu is smart and smart, and after he returned at the age of 5, he became the pearl in his father's hand. Of course, this was the envy of several of my father's other ladies (the number of wives and concubines was a lot of things), and they treated the mother and son from Japan very badly, and they harassed them all day. Therefore, sumanshu's life back in China was not good.

At that time, sumanshu was often scolded by his fellow people as a "wild bastard of the East". Her father, Su Jiesheng, because of his busy business and could not take care of these bad things at home, made Kawai Xian very cold, so she could not bear the humiliation, and in a fit of anger, she threw Su Manshu back to Japan.

Su Manshu, who was thrown down by two Japanese women, was even more miserable. Father Su Jiesheng saw that things were not right, and he could not let his son be tortured to death, so he sent Su Manshu back to his hometown of Lixi Village in Zhuhai and let the old people raise him.

(2) First renunciation

After Su Manshu was sent away, his father took a concubine and had a son, so he forgot about Su Manshu. Therefore, Sumanshu's life in the countryside is still relatively bleak. When he was 12 years old, he unfortunately fell ill with malaria, and the tribesmen were reluctant to see him, so they threw him into the firewood room to fend for himself. Although he survived under the care of a sister-in-law, this incident has always haunted him.

In the face of his unfortunate death, SuManshu was very desperate. On this day, there was a monk (Dharma name Zanchu) passing by the door of the house, Xiao Su thought to himself, there is no point at home, simply follow the people as a monk, good villains can also eat mixed food.

In this way, Su Manshu followed the Zanchu monk all the way to the Longevity Temple in Guangzhou and lived the day of eating and praying to the Buddha. But not long after, before Su Manshu was officially shaved, he was thrown out of the temple. The reason was that he did not keep his precepts, and in order to understand the hunger, he secretly grabbed a pigeon and burned it to eat.

After being expelled from the temple, Su Manshu had nowhere to go, so he had to return to the Su family. When the father saw this son, he was also pitiful; besides, he also thought that this son was teachable, so he took him to his aunt's house in Shanghai. In Shanghai, he entered a church school and received a new type of education.

Su Manshu was extremely intelligent, and as soon as he arrived at the school, he went down like a fierce tiger, a dragon entered the sea, and quickly learned many skills. Because he had lived in two countries, was familiar with Chinese and Japanese bilingualism, and had a natural ability to understand languages, he quickly mastered several languages such as English, French, German, sanskrit, etc., and became an outstanding talent for a time.

In 1899, Su Manshu was admitted to Datong University in Yokohama, Japan, and with the financial support of his cousin Lin Ziyuan, he studied abroad. The reason why he chose to study in Japan was also to find his mother.

(3) The second renunciation

In the second year of Japan, Sumanshu finally found his mother Kawai-sen, who he thought about day and night, in a small mountain village on the outskirts of Yokohama.

After 10 years of separation, mother and son reunited, and the two embraced each other and cried. Of course, at this time, Su Manshu did not know that his birth mother was someone else.

Su Manshu is 15 years old, he looks like a talent, is still a college student, in his mother's small mountain village seems to stand out, naturally attracted the attention of many village girls. A girl named Kikuko walked into Sumanshu's field of vision.

What teenager is not affectionate? Under the cover of a cloud of brilliant cherry blossoms, SuManshu and Kikuko soon fell into a romantic love.

However, the good times did not last long, and Su Manshu's relationship ended. One of his uncles was also in Japan, and when he learned that he had a good relationship with a Japanese girl, he interfered; of course, Kikuko's parents were not satisfied with their daughter's dealings with Sumanshu, after all, they were still children at the time. So the lover Kikuko, in shame and anger, jumped into the sea and committed suicide.

Sumanshu fell into great pain. Feeling the impermanence of life, he interrupted his studies and returned to China, where he once again had the idea of renunciation.

He came to Pujian Temple on Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou and decided to become a monk. To this end, he also "retreated" for three months of asceticism. Regarding Su Manshu's second renunciation, his good friend Zhang Shizhao once wrote a poem: "The highest name is nameless, who understands ruthlessness and affection." Fei Xi temporarily went to Pujian Temple, chanting the sutra and not avoiding Lu Cheng."

However, this time, like the last time, Su Manshu is still in the dust. A 16-year-old teenager, facing the ancient Buddha green lantern, is ultimately difficult to get rid of the pain of loneliness. He looked sad all day and sighed long and short. After a psychological struggle, the reluctant Sumanshu left the monastery again and boarded a ship to japan.

After returning to Yokohama, Sumanshu continued his previous studies. Two years later, due to his excellent grades, he was admitted to Waseda University. In 1903, he transferred to the Japanese Army Non-Commissioned Officer School. While reading, he recalled his love affair with Kikuko and wrote a tragic novel, "The Tale of the Broken Wild Goose".

After the novel was published in Japan, it produced a lot of sensations and resonated with many idiot men and women. Later, in 1912, when Li Shutong (Master Hongyi) was the chief writer and editor of the Shanghai Pacific Daily, he serialized the "Record of the Broken Hong and Zero Wild Geese" in the newspaper, which also aroused great repercussions in China and became one of the representative works of Mandarin Duck Butterfly School literature.

(4) The revolutionary Sumanshu

At that time, Su Manshu was less than 20 years old, and he joined the Youth Association of a revolutionary organization composed of Chinese students in Japan. He also participated in the "Anti-Russian Volunteer Brigade" led by Sun Yat-sen, the Huaxing Association led by Huang Xing, and even participated in the "Yokohama Assassination Group" and planned the assassination of Kang Youwei. At that time, Kang Youwei was no longer a revolutionary, he became an opportunist, in the name of the revolution, frantically accepted donations in Japan, and then took a huge amount of money to Hong Kong for a free time.

Su Manshu had already inquired into Kang Youwei's whereabouts and swore to his comrades: "Kang Youwei deceived the world and stole his name, pretended to be public and private, amassed money, insulted comrades, and all those who had flesh and blood should be annihilated!" "Unfortunately, it didn't work out.

In short, sumanshu was resolute in his revolutionary will at that time and was appreciated by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The poem mentioned at the beginning of this article, "The sea and heavenly dragons fight blood and yellow, and wear long hair and sing songs to see the wilderness" is written at this time.

At that time, Su Manshu's revolutionary footprints spread all over Japan, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Java, Vietnam and other places, covering most of Southeast Asia, and there were many revolutionary fighters in his circle of friends, in addition to Sun Huang, there were also Song Jiaoren, Chen Duxiu, Zhang Shizhao, Zhang Taiyan, Liu Yazi, Cai Yuanpei, Liao Zhongkai, Chiang Kai-shek, Hu Hanmin, etc. Su Manshu also became a "noisy" figure.

However, Su Manshu's active participation in revolutionary activities was strongly opposed by his cousin Lin Ziyuan, who informed his father Su Jiesheng that his father was very angry, and the two cut off Su Manshu's source of livelihood, so he was forced to return to China and continue to devote himself to the revolution.

(5) Third renunciation

After returning to China, without financial resources, Su Manshu first taught at Wuzhong Public School in Suzhou, and then went to Shanghai to work as an editor and translator for the "National Daily" sponsored by Zhang Shizhao. During this period, Su Manshu once again gave full play to his excellent literary skills, and wrote many miscellaneous commentaries with revolutionary colors that were flawed in the times, causing quite a stir.

During this period, Su Manshu also relied on his good foreign language skills to cooperate with his friend Chen Duxiu in translating Hugo's masterpiece "Les Misérables", which was published under the name of "Miserable Society", criticizing the "Les Misérables" under the qing government and the feudal concepts of thousands of years. Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, the translation was not completed. When the two broke up, Su Manshu was full of emotions and left a poem for Chen Duxiu, which was the other one mentioned at the beginning: "... Laughing and crying for no reason, even if there is joy, it is like ice. ”

Sumanshu also translated the poems of the great English poet Byron with excellent ancient poetry skills. At that time, Lu Xun, who was three years older than him and already had a certain influence in the literary world, was also shocked when he saw his translation of "Selected Poems of Byron", calling his translation "a good mind". Later (1907), Lu Xun considered cooperating with him to found the literary magazine "New Life", but for some reason did not succeed.

Genius is different, Su Manshu not only introduced foreign literature to China, but also introduced Chinese classical literature to the world. He translated into English the "Long Hate Song", "Mulan Ci", and some of the best works selected from the "Departure from the Sorrows" and "The Book of Poetry", and compiled them into "Literary Marriage" and published them.

In addition, he also selected some fine works from the poems of Tao Yuanming, Li Bai, Du Fu, Li He and others, and compiled them into the "Collection of Chinese-English Samadhi" in the form of Chinese and English comparisons.

Later, Su Manshu published an essay of his own in guangming ribao, "Woo Woo Guangdong People," scolding those foreign slave compradors who had forgotten their ancestors and recognized thieves as their fathers, and satirized that some Cantonese people only knew how to eat, drink, and have fun, but did not know the difficulties of state affairs, which led to the closure and suspension of publications by newspapers and periodicals.

At the same time, the leaders of the democratic revolutionary movement, Zhang Taiyan, Zou Rong, and others, were arrested by the Qing government. Disheartened, Su Manshu went to leifeng Mountain Haiyun Temple in Panyu County, Guangzhou, to become a monk again in January 1904, cut his hair and became a monk, and took the name of Manshu (he was not originally called Su Manshu, his real name was Su Jian, Zizi Valley).

This is the third time that Sumanshu has been ordained in this life, as evidenced by his own poem: "How can I become a Buddha when I am born?" Dreams are invincible. Thank you Liu San for asking for the news, and still have a small life as a poet monk."

But this time, as with the previous two times, the six impure SuManshu still did not last long. A few months later, he had not yet obtained the official qualification of a monk, because he still could not eat vegetarian food, could not bear the pain of loneliness, and slipped away again.

One day, Su Manshu took advantage of the abbot's outing of the temple to steal the late master's brother Bo Jing's du mu and fled. Since then, he has called himself "Bojing" and called himself "Manshu Monk", and began a career of cloud travel around the world. He centered on Shanghai, such as the Crane of Idle Clouds, and traveled to and from the north and south of the great river, Japan and Southeast Asia.

Later, Mr. Nan Huaijin once commented on Su Manshu: "The tracks are wandering outside the skeleton, and the will is indulged in lust."

Mr. Lu Xun once commented on Su Manshu's "Qiankun Great Transfer" behavior that was interspersed between monks and laymen: "I have a very strange friend, as soon as he has money, he goes to drink, and when he has no money, he runs to become a monk." ”

After that, Su Manshu used monks as a cover, and did not hesitate to do things, sometimes teaching for a living, sometimes living by selling literature, sometimes living in temples, sometimes begging for loans from friends and friends, sometimes "poor and hungry, then supporting the whole day" (Liu Yazi), and sometimes even knocking down gold teeth for cigarettes. This "non-abstinent" monk in Jin Yong's pen doesn't care about anything, how to be dashing and how to come.

(6) Sugar monks who eat meat

SuManshu also has a nickname called Sugar Monk, yes, it is "Sugar Monk", not a mispronunciation of "Tang Monk". Because he loves sugar. Just as Su Dongpo boasted of "three hundred lychees in a day", Su Manshu also described in his essays that he was in Hangzhou "thirty packs of eclipse crisp sugar".

Once a friend, the famous scholar Chen Taoyi, came to see him. He found that Chen Tao had three yuan in his pocket, and immediately took away one and a half pieces and took it to buy candy to eat. He was addicted to sugar and often ran out of money to buy sugar. When he really had no money to buy sugar, he collected the empty sugar bottles under the bed to sell the rags, and the money in exchange for the money continued to buy sugar.

The famous novelist Bao Tianxiao also wrote a poem to ridicule Su Manshu's sugar addiction "vice": "Pine sugar orange cake and roses, sweet and crispy mouth." I think it is the master's heart that is bitter, and he wants to get from the bitterness."

As mentioned earlier, Su Manshu once knocked down his golden teeth to change his cigarette, and he even carried out such a divine operation for buying sugar.

There was a rumor about it. In the bustling crowds of the Bund in Shanghai that year, a young monk in shabby clothes suddenly appeared, and he rushed to a candy store in a panic.

This monk is none other than Sumanshu. He shouted to the clerk, "Dude, come and pack Moldon!" ”

"Molden" is a brand of candy, authentic Western goods, according to legend, the French literary hero Alexandre Dumas's la traviata loved this sugar, and it was still a relatively high-end candy in Shanghai at that time. When the shop guy quoted the price, Su Manshu went through all the pockets on his body, but he didn't have enough money, so he had to go away sadly.

However, it wasn't long before Sumanshu returned. Holding aloft a hand, holding two golden teeth in his hand, and the corners of his mouth still hanging from the red blood, he shouted at the candy shop guy in a tone that was a little leaky but full of boldness:

"Sugar change!"

Everyone present was stunned. Since then, Su Manshu's "sugar monk" trumpet name has shaken the rivers and lakes.

As we all know, Tang monks do not eat meat. But this sugar monk loves meat, especially beef. Friends often use beef to take Sumanshu to shabu.

Once, he went to take a bath with Song Jiaoren, Lin Guangchen and a few other buddies. The others went out of the bathroom first and got dressed on the outside kang. Song Jiaoren deliberately shouted loudly: "Let's go down to the restaurant at noon and eat beef!" "That dares to be kind, go, brother is hungry, today I want to rub a meal!" They also deliberately made all kinds of noises and began to walk outside.

Sumanshu shouted anxiously in the bathroom: "Hey, wait for me, wait for me!" Saying that, he snatched the door and went out, and even his pants were too late to wear, and he came out drenched in wetness. Friends laughed when they saw it, and since then they have been given the name of "naked running".

Su Manshu is a standard foodie, and he has a problem with eating, that is, he likes to overeat. One night, his friend Chen Went Ill (a famous poet) bought back a bag of chestnuts, and Su Manshu ate chestnuts with the Chen family's father and daughter. After the chestnuts were eaten, Chen went to rest. Su Manshu felt that he had not eaten too much, and after the Chen family's father and daughter fell asleep, he secretly went out to buy a pack of food. Chen Wentai had long warned him: "Eating too much chestnut will bloat your stomach, or eat less is better." But Su Manshu did not listen, and as a result, he ate and was very uncomfortable in his stomach, and he did not sleep well all night.

Once an old friend Liu Yazi gave Su Manshu 20 taro cakes, and he ate them all in one meal, and finally his stomach hurt.

Another time, Sumanshu made a bet with someone that he could eat 60 meat buns in one meal. Of course, it is the kind of relatively small steamed bun, which is also very scary, even if there are 60 dumplings, not everyone can easily kill them. When he ate 50 of them, his friends advised him not to eat them. But he insisted on eating, and in the end he got all 60 meat buns, and he couldn't hold on...

(7) The first love monk of the Republic of China: not a beautiful woman does not give paintings

Su Manshu is simply an all-rounder, in addition to writing poetry and novels of a high standard, he is also a master of calligraphy and painting. Huang Binhong, a master of the Chinese landscape painting generation and one of the "Four Great Masters of Literati Calligraphy in the 20th Century", once praised Su Manshu as well as Qi Baishi:

"SuManshu left only a few dozen paintings in his short life, but the weight was worth all the paintings in my life."

You know, Mr. Huang Binhong is very long-lived, lived for 90 years, and his works are many. It can be seen how superb Su Manshu's painting skills are.

After Su Manshu's fame in the painting world rose, many people asked him for paintings, and he was also quite generous, and everyone wanted to give it. But there is a principle, the painter can give away for free all beautiful women, as long as a beautiful photo can be exchanged; if the man wants to paint, do not pay money to talk about!

Even the famous poet Ye Chulun, who was very familiar with him, was no exception. Once Ye Chulun asked Su Manshu for Mo Bao to touch the nail, and he locked it in the room in a fit of anger. But SuManshu still insisted on not painting him. In the end, Ye Chulun thought of a trick and took a bag of "Molden" sugar to tempt it, which led to a "Dream Map of Fendi Hanging".

Why does Sumanshu only give free paintings to beautiful women? It turned out that this Jun was still a "flower monk" and a talented man. Like the famous pink lady Hua Xuenan, Pei Shan, Xue Hong, etc. in the Republic of China, they have all passed out gossip with Su Manshu. Therefore, Su Manshu is also known as the first love monk of the Republic of China.

However, Su Manshu is still more cautious about the word "love", and he is by no means a promiscuous person. For example, at the age of 24, he met a geisha, Hyakusuke Kaede, in Japan. They fell in love at first sight. That night, the two snuggled up and talked, holding candlelights until dawn, and no "body language" happened. For this reason, Hyakusuke Kaede still didn't understand a bit, thinking that she wasn't stylish enough, and she was a bit sad. Sumanshu said gently:

"Compared with physical intercourse, spiritual mutual affection is more resistant to the test of time!"

At that time, Su Manshu had already become a monk for the third time, and he did not want to delay the future of Baisuke Fengzi, and when he was parting, he gave it this poem: "Return a bowl of merciless tears, hate when they do not meet without shaving..."

Nicknamed "Sugar Monk", he loved beautiful women and ate meat, and he was ordained three times and three times, and the cause of death was lamentable

(8) Dead burial "Lover's Bridge", doing ghosts is also merry

Unfortunately, such a genius, wizard, and ghost talent as Su Manshu died at a young age. In the spring of 1918, Su Manshu died at the age of 34 at The Guangci Hospital in Shanghai. The general explanation for his death is that it was caused by his overeating.

During Sumanshu's hospitalization, the doctors strictly controlled his diet and did not allow him to eat sugar. However, he secretly escaped from the hospital and went to the street to eat eight treasure rice, rice cakes, chestnuts and ice cream, resulting in aggravated gastrointestinal disease and death. After his death, a lot of sugar paper was turned over under his bed and next to his pillow.

Sumanshu is not only addicted to sugar, but also particularly likes to drink ice water, and is unrestrained. Zhang Taiyan recalled in the "Manshu Testament Benyan" that when Su Manshu was in Japan, "drinking five or six pounds of ice a day, unable to move later than night, people think that they are dead, they see it as if they are angry, and tomorrow they will drink ice as before." ”

This gentleman can be described as spontaneous.

Life is short, if you can eat and drink beautifully, it can be regarded as no regrets in this life. For this, Su Manshu's close friend Chen Duxiu once made this interpretation:

"He saw that the whole world was dirty, and his world-weary heart was very warm, but he couldn't find another way out, so he ate and drank randomly in order to die quickly." Among many old friends, an innocent man like Manshu is really rare. ”

As a famous "love monk", Su Manshu naturally had to "flow" after his death. After his death, he was buried in Hangzhou's West Lake, along with the Long Bridge and the Broken Bridge, which is called the "Three Lovers Bridge" of the West Lake, next to the tomb of Su Xiaoxiao, a famous prostitute of the Southern Dynasty. Presumably, in Elysium, these two lovers will also come to a cross-over of a thousand years to carry out a romantic wind and snow moon...
