However, a small number of Nationalist troops are still stubbornly resisting, including a remnant of the Kuomintang army that fled to the Golden Triangle and became the "Emperor of The Land" of Burma, leaving more than 60,000 descendants in the local area today.
Escape to the "Golden Triangle"
At the end of 1949, the defeat of the Kuomintang had been decided, and the troops were in disarray. However, Li Guohui, commander of the 709th Regiment of the Nationalist 8th Army, was an exception, and he was still stubbornly determined to "be different from the communist army", but seeing that the PLA's offensive could not be resisted, he could only retreat one after another, and finally pinned his hopes for a "counter-offensive" on fleeing to Burma, the so-called "stay in the green mountains, do not worry about firewood".
At the junction of Myanmar, Thailand and Laos, it was an outlaw place, and Li Guohui fled here with more than 1,000 remaining people and stationed there. Later, they also successively received the remnants of the Nationalist army that came to defect, with a total strength of more than 1,500 people. Although they are the remnants of the nationalist army, they are still much stronger than the bandits who are not in the local area in terms of combat effectiveness.
Ambitious
After Li Guohui's unit took root in the Golden Triangle, it continued to plan the "counter-offensive to the mainland" plan in mind. Chiang Kai-shek was deeply pleased to learn that he still had a unit in Burma that was still "firmly anti-communist," and specially sent Lieutenant General Li Mi of the Nationalist Army to command this unit, and awarded them the title of "Republic of China Revival Force."
Under Li Mi's planning, these nationalist troops also developed in an orderly manner in the Golden Triangle. They have their own division of labor, those who can fight are responsible for guarding and preparing for war, those who can cultivate land are responsible for growing grain, and those who are good at business go outside to earn military expenses for the troops. Among them, some even engaged in the profiteering business of drug trafficking, and at this time, this national army unit was no different from the big drug lords in the Golden Triangle.
Disillusioned
After years of operation, this national army has expanded to more than 30,000 people, and it seems that it has become the local "earth emperor" in Myanmar. And their plan to "counterattack the mainland" has never been abandoned, and they often sabotage the border of Yunnan on the mainland and threaten the security of the people on the mainland. Moreover, the drug trafficking they engaged in was undoubtedly a deep sin, so in 1960, the People's Liberation Army launched the "Spring of the Mekong River" operation, which taught these nationalist troops a harsh lesson.
Under the leadership of China, the burmese and Thai troops finally carried out a "great cleansing" of the cancer of the Golden Triangle, and many of the so-called "revival troops" surrendered to the Thai army, while the rest of the remnants fled back to Taiwan. Those who fled to Thailand basically gave up the illusion of "counterattacking the mainland" and honestly married and had children, and now they have more than 60,000 descendants in Thailand and are completely integrated into Thailand.
