A small owl with medium-sized ear hair and rounded tips. There are no gender size differences for data. There are fine dark and light strips on the crown and neck, and there is no collar. The upper part is warm brown, quite thick dark stripes with wider dark and pale stripes from the mantle to the lower back. Large, black frame with rounded white spots of outer mesh forming a pronounced row at the shoulders. The flight feathers and tail feathers are obscured to a light brown and dark brown. The throat is pale yellowish brown , the upper thorax is cinnamon brown with coarse hairs and some dark axial stripes ; the lower breast , flanks and abdomen have heavy white, yellowish brown and dark brown bands and blurred axial stripes. The face plate is pale, with some darker creepy markings, a thin, blurred, darker brown wrinkle, and pale eyebrows with subtle dark spots. The eyes are pale yellow with a narrow, bare pink orbital ring. Bill and Brain are khaki, and Bill has deep cutting edges and tips. There are sparse feathers, the posterior edge and lower part are bare, the bare toes are dull yellowish brown, the claws are larger, and the character is dark. Teenager unknown.

A long string of weeyu weeyu notes is emitted, each lasting less than half a second and repeating every four seconds. Food and hunting two men were seen taking away a spider, a beetle and a gecko. The habitat is found in wooded areas close to sea level. The status and distribution of endemic species from the island of Great nicobar in the Bay of Bengal; it may also occur in Nicobar Jr. This species is of course rare, but rarely known. It was first described in 1998 from two specimens collected in Greater Nicobar. Geographic variant monotype.

Similar species are geographically separated by the Simeulue Scops owl smaller, more reddish brown and uniform, but have black stripes in the vestibule and underneath. With the exception of the Biak scops owl, all other Southeast Asian scops owls have dark axial stripes on the upper part.
