Located on a bay near the Costa de Los community in Chile, Bahia Azul House sits on a rocky promontory overlooking the Pacific Ocean – though it would be more accurate to describe its location as reclining. Designed by Santiago's studio Felipe Assadi Arquitectos, the house's straight-line form slopes to accommodate the slope of the terrain. This tilt, coupled with irregular openings in the façade facing the sea, when viewed from the bay or from the adjacent pebbly beach, gives the impression of a deformed modernist structure. It is as if the building humbly kowtows to the power of the landscape.
The two-story building enters from the hillside behind by an irregularly paved path and features an elongated floor plan that unfolds in a sequence of stepped spaces spanning several half-floors, a relatively traditional layout with a sloping façade mischievously hidden outside.
The upper floor accommodates the living and dining rooms in an open plan layout, adjacent to the kitchen and a bedroom on either side. All spaces open onto a wide balcony that runs along the length of the building, following a stepped layout of the interior. As a buffer for the balcony, the concrete façade has large irregularly cut openings that frame the picturesque landscape in different ways, depending on where you are in the house.
On the lower level, built on a rocky hillside, two further bedrooms and a lounge area follow a stepped layout on the upper level. The views of these spaces consist of a continuous, ribbon-like sloping opening consisting of cantilevered balconies on the upper floors and stone walls that cushion the narrow courtyard below them.
