Julien Dupre was born in Paris in 1851 as the son of jewelers Jean Dupre and Pauline Boyer. He planned to continue his father's work, but due to the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), sales in the family store declined, and young people began attending night classes at the Academy of Decorative Arts in Paris. Studied under Isidore Piel and Henri Leman.
In the mid-1870s, he traveled to Picardy to become a student of the naturalist Désiré François Loget. In 1876, the artist met and became engaged here with Du zhe, daughter of Désiré François Loget.
Dupre is interested in genre painting, capturing idyllic country life.
Member of the Paris Salon from 1876 to 1899.
He died in Paris on April 15, 1910.
