位于非洲东南部海岸约400公里外的马达加斯加是地球上的第四大岛，这里有一个别有洞天的世界。
马达加斯加有时被称为第八大洲，它在8800万年前与印度次大陆分离，而它与非洲大陆的分离则是在第二次分离的4700万年前，所以，岛上90%的动植物在地球上其他地方都找不到，也就不足为奇了。
岛上的大部分巨型动物（包括3米多高的象鸟和大猩猩大小的狐猴）已经灭绝。自从人类在约2000年前第一次来到岛上后，这里90%的原始森林栖息地也已经消失，岛上最早的人类来自马来群岛，很久以后，有人从非洲大陆、阿拉伯、印度和欧洲来到这里。
