#Australian National Bird Fun Facts# Emus is Australia's national bird, and adult females are larger than males. An adult female lays only 7-15 eggs from November to April of the following year, and the responsibility for incubating the eggs is entirely borne by the male. Throughout the incubation period, the male barely eats or drinks for up to two and a half months, showing a strong "fatherly love". Chicks follow the male for two years after birth.
After the male begins to hatch, the female continues to lay eggs but no longer mates with it. Emus is not faithful monogamous, and when the male begins to incubate the eggs, the female will mate with other males. Up to half of a litter of chicks is the product of females and other males. Male birds turn a blind eye to the female's cheating behavior. Don't bother if you can't see it.
The male emu is loving and he will adopt any stray chicks, as long as the birds are no larger than the male emu's own children. Wild emus can live for 10 years, and domesticated ones can live for more than 20 years.
