On that day, Ethiopia celebrated the 81st Patriot Day. On 5 May 1941, when Ethiopian patriots defeated the Italian invaders with the help of allied forces, Emperor Haile Selassie I returned to the capital Addis Ababa and restored the throne. Thereafter, 5 May was designated as "Patriots' Day" in Ethiopia.
