Teacher of the Ethiopian "Luban Workshop": Hit by happiness

author:Beiqing Net

CCTV news: The "Belt and Road" initiative has driven huge construction demand, which in turn has generated a large number of talent demand. Vocational and technical training institutions such as the mainland's "Luban Workshop" have also gone global with the rapid advancement of the "Belt and Road" construction and blossomed overseas. In the African country of Ethiopia, there is a "technical controller" Jiang Dai from Tianjin. Today, he is a teacher at the Ethiopian "Luban Workshop" and has taught many teachers of vocational education in Ethiopia.

I am Jiang Dai, here is the "Luban Workshop" located in the Ethiopian Institute of Technical and Vocational Training. As a technical controller, I love the work of "Luban Workshop", although because of the epidemic, there is only one teacher here from China, but I believe that one person can also create wonderful.

It's eight o'clock in the evening, this is our mechanical and electrical building, and everyone else in the mechanical and electrical building is gone, but our Luban workshop working group is still enthusiastically studying.

From the establishment of the Luban Workshop in April 2021 to the present, three days a week, I will use the evening time to train the trainees of the "Luban Workshop".

Jiang Dai, head of the Chinese side of the Esseruban Workshop: The "Luban Workshop" was just established during the epidemic period. The most challenging thing is that the domestic installation and commissioning personnel cannot come after these equipment come.

At that time, my lover Gao Yang was also in Ethiopia, and in order to ensure that the workshop could be unveiled on time, the two of us explored the equipment together and debugged and installed it.

Jiang Dai, head of the Chinese side of the Esseruban workshop: I was very impressed at that time, about a week, this school he was going to lock the door at night, (in order to debug the equipment) I took the initiative to ask to lock me in this.

In April 2021, the Ethiopian "Luban Workshop" was finally successfully unveiled, which attracted the attention of all walks of life in Ethiopia. When the Minister of Higher Education of Ethiopia came to visit our "Luban Workshop", he said that there was great promise for vocational education in Ethiopia. Even many countries in East Africa, such as Kenya, Tanzania, and Somalia, vocational colleges have sent people to learn from exchanges. Our workshop gives Ethiopian vocational education a platform that is in line with international first-class standards.

Jiang Chen, head of the Chinese side of the Esseruban workshop: This laboratory is industrial control, in fact, the box you see has a display on it, which imitates the production process of a smart factory, including the equipment inside, which is actually a standard project of an international competition. We Chinese students have to participate in such a training before the international competition every time, and now Ethiopian students have a standard platform for participating in international competition.

Ece "Luban Workshop" student Goma: "Luban Workshop" has many state-of-the-art equipment and excellent teaching systems, and it is of great significance to me to be able to study here. I was able to improve my technical skills and make myself more competitive at work.

Eunas: Our country once introduced some advanced robots or equipment, but no one could operate them. He (Teacher Jiang) hopes to teach us how to operate these advanced automation equipment, and I hope to engage in this kind of work in the future to help the development of my country.

My relationship with Ethiopia actually began in 2011, when I first came to Ethiopia with curiosity and ignorance.

Jiang Dai, head of the Chinese side of the Esseruban workshop: In the early two years, there were very few teachers, and there were no teachers who taught communications at that time, so I took every class. Once I was assigned an antenna design, which is a Heavenly Book course in China. I was on campus with the students carrying a cauldron (antenna receiver), and it was the first time we had walked out of the classroom, and when they found a lot of problems debugging the satellite, we went back to the classroom. So that effect was the most touching to me, because the previous antenna class had a high number of absentees, and everyone was memorizing formulas, but there have been almost no absences since the one I took.

At that time, I relied on this practice-oriented teaching method to capture the hearts of a large number of students, and every time I came to class, the classroom was always full, and many students from outside classes had to squeeze in with chairs.

Jiang Dai, head of the Chinese side of the Esseruban Workshop: At that time, I worked for two years and returned to China after the end of the first contract period. When the then Vice Minister of Vocational Education of the Ethiopian Ministry of Education visited China, he proposed to the Chinese Ministry of Education by name to invite me and my lover to return to Africa again, to Ethiopia. I thought, well, come on. And then ten years passed.

Reporter: Children are born.

Jiang Chen, head of the Chinese side of the Esseruban Workshop: Yes, and my child's name is Jiang Tianya. That Yahweh means Addis Ababa, and the heavens are Tianjin. Because of these two cities, most of my youth energy is devoted to them.

In 2020, I developed an Amharic programming tutorial that shows Amharic on one line and Chinese on one line. When I shared it with my classmates in class, everyone was very happy and shocked. Because in Ethiopia, a country with a population of over 100 million, no one has published a tutorial on writing in the local language, and then I directly put the entire code on the Internet.

Jiang Dai, head of the Chinese side of the Esseruban Workshop: Because many people may even have to go to other countries, go to Europe, or like some of the more advanced countries in South Africa, to pay thousands of euros to learn. But here we are (luban workshop courses) are completely free.

Limited by objective conditions, Ethiopian students are much more dependent on teachers than domestic students. After the epidemic, inspired by online teaching, I began to find local teachers and students to record teaching videos in the local language, and I hoped to help luban workshop courses develop more locally.

Maharit, Teacher of Luban Workshop, Ethiopian Institute of Technology and Vocational Training: When our school was called the Ethiopian-Chinese Joint Technical College, I was a student of Jiang Dai, and he was such a special teacher to me. He showed us so much technology and now I'm his colleague, but still his student because I'm still learning from him.

Over the years, I have taught about 1500 students in Ethiopia. Previously, I mainly trained teachers in the Ethiopian vocational education system, and it can be said that there are basically my students in every vocational education school in Ethiopia. In recent years, he has taught several full-time students who have entered the college entrance examination, and many of them have entered the local well-known enterprises such as Ethiopian aviation, telecommunications, and television stations after graduation. Other students have founded their own technology companies, animation companies, and so on. Whenever they tell me that they have used what I have taught them to achieve something, or have made money, I feel hit by happiness.

Jiang Dai, head of the Chinese side of the Eseruban workshop: This is a graduate of mine, and he has opened a maintenance shop himself. Especially in Ethiopia I think this is a particularly difficult step. On two mugs is the logo of his shop called Brother Repair Shop. Then he told me that one of the brothers was me. In fact, these years are very simple, it is this kind of happiness that is constantly repeated, which can support me and Gao Yang to stay here for so many years.

Esse "Luban Workshop" student Calkidan: Teacher Jiang is very good and very good to us.

Se se "Luban Workshop" student Guan Shanhai: I learned a lot of skills from him, including technical and work skills, which made me more confident to continue my studies.

Jiang Dai, head of the Chinese side of the Esseruban Workshop: So as an integral part of the "Belt and Road", I am also very proud. Because I see that there is really a reality around me, and we actually talk about the people-to-people connection is actually the most important thing. I told my students that I hoped that one day, Ethiopia would no longer need me, and that was my ultimate goal.
