Former Wimbledon champion Boris Becker was jailed for two and a half years for concealing assets and loans worth £2.5 million to evade debt.

The six-time Grand Slam champion, who denied violating UK bankruptcy law after being declared bankrupt in 2017, owes creditors nearly £50 million.

Becker, 54, was convicted by a jury on four counts under the Bankruptcy Code. He was acquitted on 20 counts.

He paid almost £390,000 to others from his business account.

The case focused on Becker's bankruptcy in June 2017 due to an outstanding £3 million loan from his mansion in Mallorca, Spain.

Earlier this month, after a hearing of about two weeks, the jury found Becker guilty of removing property, failing to disclose property and concealing debts.

This breaking news is being updated and more details will be announced soon.

According to the latest estimates from the Office for National Statistics, the number of covid-19 infections in the UK has reached a record low. In the week ending April 23, approximately 2.87 million people tested positive, 900,000 fewer than in the previous week.

Coronavirus levels in England, Scotland and Wales are declining, but nothing has changed in Northern Ireland.

Although the number of people in all age groups has declined in most parts of the UK, the Uk's Office for National Statistics says infection rates remain high.

According to the latest estimates, 1 in 23 people tested positive for the virus, down from 17 in the previous week – a 24% drop.

This corresponds to the largest weekly decline in total infections since the National Bureau of Statistics began its survey in July 2020. The numbers are estimates based on tests of thousands of people in random households in the UK.

Some free tests will run until the end of April in Scotland and until the end of June in Wales and Northern Ireland.

The ONS study found that:

  • 1 in 25 people in England is infected with COVID-19 (less than 17)
  • 1 in 18 people in Wales is infected with COVID-19 (less than 15)
  • 1 in 25 people in Northern Ireland (little change from the previous week)
  • 1 in 25 people in Scotland is infected with COVID-19 (less than 19)

Infection rates have declined in all parts of England. The North East was highest (6.1% tested positive) and lowest in London (3.6%).

In England, infection rates among young people over the age of 70 (down to 5 per cent) are declining, with the youngest people – those aged 2 to 10 (2 per cent) – falling the most.

Official UK figures show that the number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 continues to decline. The number has risen from about 1,100 per day in mid-February to nearly 2,400 at the end of March, but has since dropped to about 1,455 per day.

Meanwhile, the number of hospital patients infected with the virus in intensive care beds is now around 325.

Data from mid-April showed 1,150 deaths in the previous week, with Covid-19 on the death certificate, suggesting that it was most likely the underlying cause of death. In mid-January, 1,673 people died each week.
