Tennis legend Boris Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison

Boris Becker and his partner, Lillian de Carvallo Montello, arrived at the Southwark Crown Court on Friday

Former tennis player Boris Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison earlier this month after being convicted of four charges under the Bankruptcy Code.

The German, who previously coached current world number one Novak Djokovic, was convicted of hiding multiple assets, including nearly £700,000, 75,000 shares of a tech company and some of his most prized tennis titles - including two Wimbledon trophies. After Becker was declared bankrupt five years ago, he was legally obliged to declare all of his assets.

Boris Becker was sentenced today for violating bankruptcy rules

After bankruptcy in 2017, the six-time Grand Slam winner handed over his wedding ring but withheld ownership of his £1.3 million home in his native Germany, a £692,000 loan he received from a Liechtenstein bank and his stake in an artificial intelligence company.

Prosecutor Rebecca Chalkley told jurors that Becker gave bankruptcy officials a "runaway." She added: "Obligations and responsibilities are with him. Becker will spend at least 15 months in prison.

Becker, who was accompanied by his partner Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, wore his Wimbledon tie to The Southwick Royal Court, who had previously been convicted of tax evasion and attempted tax evasion in Germany in 2002, and Judge Deborah Taylor was implored to take that into account in deciding on the verdict for the 54-year-old.

Becker has earned nearly £40 million in his illustrious playing career, but he says he has faced financial hardship after retirement due to expensive divorces, childcare costs and his lavish lifestyle.

Becker made history in 1985 as the youngest Grand Slam men's singles champion ever, when he won Wimbledon at just 17.

The following year, he went on to defend his title on SW19 before winning the tournament for the third and final time in 1989. Becker also won the Australian Open twice, in 1991 and 1996, and the 1989 U.S. Open.

Becker also won the gold medal in men's doubles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
